“Obasan” has burdened author with J.C. identity
BURLINGTON, Ont. — The acclaimed Japanese Canadian author
of the best-seller Obasan was an honored — and popular — guest
recently at Sheridan College.
Joy Kogawa conducted a poetry reading session attended by ap
proximately 150 first-year graphic design students from Sheridan
School of Visual Arts.
During the session, the Toronto resident read excerpts from her
novel Obasan, a tragic description of her youth in Canada following
the Second World War.
:
The novel, a best-seller in Canada and the United States, is her
first. It has earned her a number of (prestigious literary awards includ
ing the Paperback Award, the American book Award and the Library
Award.
The Vancouver native is also the author of three volumes of poetry
including Splinter Moon, and she is a former writer for the office of
the Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
Obasan is an autobiographical account of the hardships endured
by a young Japanese Canadian girl as a result of the Canadian govern
ment's imposition of a dispersal policy following the war.

NEW
PRAGUE. — “A new star is
born,” Czechoslovakia's
Communist Party newspaper
J Rude Pravo recently com
mented on Midori Ito, the
standout performer of the
t team that scored a Japanese
triumph at the “Prague1
Skate” figure skating com
petition held here recently.
Midori Ito was the best and
Sachie Yuki placed second in
the women's event. Takashi
Mura was first in the men's
category, and Ito and Mura
teamed up for the pair skat
ing to clinch the first prize for
national teams.
It was 14-year old Ito, who
created a stir, Rude Pravo
| said of her performance:
“Five triple jumps without a
fault, all presented with unob
trusive naturalness is some
thing the ‘Prague Skate’ has
not seen in the women's
category for years.”
Ml’ada Fronta, the Commu
nist youth daily, commented •
on Midori Ito: “She soared
like a bird, she hit the ice with
I
the assurance of a tight-rope
[
dancer. She is a natural talent...”
i
At the same time, however,
■
the newspaper criticized the
maximum six given the young
Japanese girl by the French
judge for technical ability as
“somewhat excessive” and
the second six for artistic ex
pression “as entirely absurd.
This little girl has to travel a
long way yet to maturity of <
movement.”
