The rat leads the lunar se

monkey, rooster, dog and
boar. In accordance with a '
complicated system of chro-,

reigns one year in every 12. ‘
The year 1984 is the Year of

leading credit card and the
world's fourth largest, could

recently with Canada Trust
Some 5.5 million Japanese
use JCB cards, which are
similar to the American Ex
press card since both offer
unlimited credit and monthly
statements due in full. But
JCB has no annual member
ship fee, while American Ex
press charges $35 a year.
About 300,000 Japanese
tourists visit Canada each
year, and about one-third carry
the JCB card.
Canada Trust, which has
200 branches in Canada, has
agreed to sign up a network
of merchants to accept the
card and process tourists'
JCB purchases via satelite
back to Tokyo.
Sean McNamara, Canada
Trust assistant V-P, said he

expected no problems in crea
ting the network because Ja-.
panese tourists spend about
$2,000 each in Canada, and
cardholders could bring $200
million in annual sales to the
stores.
“the potential for us is to
be a licensee and issue cards
in Canada,” he said, adding
that the card could be offered
toCanadians within a year.

Honolulu woman wins $1 million
HONOLULU — A 48:year old
clerk has won $1 million from a
radio station in a contest that
drew, more than four times as
many entries as Hawaii has
residents.
“I got to sit down,” said Meryl
Arakaki of Honolulu when her
name was chosen earlier last
month from 602 other contest
ants during a breakfast at a local
hotel. The prize is $20,000 per
year for 50 years.
The two-month contest, held
by KSSK radio, resulted in
4,032,715 entries^ Listeners
were able to enter as often as
they liked.

Station officials held draw
ings from the entries and an
nounced the names over the air.
People hearing their names had
a certain amount of time to call
the station to qualify for the
final drawing.
“It's the first time I ever won
anything,” Mrs. Arakaki said. “I

After hearing that she won
the big prize, Mrs. Arakaki tried
to reach her husband at home
to tell him the good news. The
line was busy.

Multiculturalism
isn't just a dream
It started in 1971 when Multiculturalism
became ah official policy of the Government of
Canada. And in 1982, the cultural mosaic that
is Canada became enshrined in the new
Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Today, everyone, no matter what their cultural
heritage, shares in those rights and freedoms.
