Readers who have been following the redress question will know that
many of the articles on the issue have dealt with internal politics and
individuals. We regret that more energy has not been directed to a discussion of the pros and cons of the various options open to Japanese
Canadians. We have avoided engaging in the controversy in the hope that
eventually internal differences: could be set aside. After a few weeks
of respite, however, the National Redress Committee has again pub
lished a series of articles dealing with internal politics.
Although some members of Sodan Kai felt that we should continue
to ignore the personal attacks, others of us felt that some readers of
this newspaper were eager to know our side of the story. Our intention
is to deal with the five “facts” raised in the article “Questions and
answers *fromthe National Redress pAmm.ttoo
Committee.”
iFirst, the National Redress Committee complains of the actions of
“Sodan supporter Tony Nabata” who spoke to civil servants of the
government and who is said to be a “close relative of a senior Sodan
spokesman.” A letter already published in this newspaper explained that
Tony Nabata is not a member of Sodan Kai.

MOTHER AND
OUR CHICKEN
FARM IN B.C.
By MIKE HOSHIKO
In the midst of the worst
depression 52 years ago, on
Jan. 9,1932, my father died of
meningitis caused by an in
fected tooth. He was only 45.
He left a young, widow and
five children. I was the oldest
son at 16 years, although
older half-sister was 15. The
youngest was my sister who
was a mere infant.
It was a cold sad day for my
mother for she had no choice
but to tough jt out for she
really couldn't return to her
brother's place in Japan
since they could hardly feed
themselves.
Marriage to her husband's
younger brother was not even
considered since he was a
gambler and penniless drif
ter. Our yobuyose hiredhand
remained for a short time and
then it was up to my mother
to run the farm.
We always got up at 5 a.m.
since that was the time my
father turned on the lights in
the chicken houses and start
ed the day's chores but now
my mother and my sister had
to tend to the chickens. First
thing, they had to fill all of
the water troughs carrying
the water from the well in
buckets made from 5-gallon
cans. It took many trips to
water 3,000 chickens. Then
with a hoe and a bucket the
daily chore of cleaning the
dropping boards had to be
done. If the dropping boards
were not cleaned first thing
in the morning, the chickens
would get their feet dirty and
the eggs dirty in the nest.
As soon as I could carry a
5-gallon can of water I was
pressed into helping and took
my turn at scraping the drop
ping boards with a hoe. In
order to reduce the number of
trips to empty the buckets

voted to talk about redress.
Sodan Kai members offered to remain after the Octo
ber 23 meeting and respond
to these charges raised by
the N.R.C. members but the
members of the N.R.C. did
not remain behind.
We are concerned by what
of somemembers of the
N.R.C. to attack any indivi
dual with views differing from
their own. We do not wish to
blame all the members of the
N.R.C., but it is difficult be
cause articles by the N.R.C.
are usually not signed. We
feel that each person should
have a right to a point of view
and a right to express that
point of view. We hope, how
ever, that every person involv
ed in the process will be pre
pared to compromise and
participate in a spirit of mu
tual respect and tolerence.
