the years, both in Japan and in the West. But the sensational Sagawa
case has proven to be a real gold mine.
Besides spawning countless articles in Japanese newspapers and
weekly magazines, both reputable and lurid, Sagawa's crime has
recently taken on sociological importance.
Sagawa, judged insane by a French court and committed to a psy
chiatric hospital outside Paris wrote a series of letters to noted Japa

“There is so much stigma
surrounding rape in Japan
that many victims feel they
have no one to turn to,” said

Rape: new fear in Japan
TOKYO — Rape is a word
that strikes fear in the hearts
of women everywhere. And,
ironically, for its - victims,
shame.
This is even more true in
Japan, according to the foun
ders of Japan's first women's
support centre for rape vic
tims, which opened in Tokyo
recently.
“There is so much stigma
surrounding rape in Japan
that many victims feel they
have no one to turn to,” said
Michiko Orita, one of the cen
tre's co-founders.
“Even the word rape itself
is taboo,” she said. “The
newspapers call us the Tokyo
Gokan Kyuen Centre (Tokyo
Rape Relief Centre), because
that's what we deliberately
called ourselves. But look
elsewhere in the articles, and
you won't find the word rape
(gogan) anywhere.”
It was precisely to provide
a place where rape victims
could seek help, and to bring
the problem of rape out into
the open that the centre was
formed, Orita said.
