Japan Judo Champ called “Greatest of all time”
TOKYO — Judo literally means “the gentle way,” but there is
nothing gentle about the way the sport's premier practitioner, Yasu
hiro Yamashita, does it. The 280-pound judo champion's matches tend
to be brief and brutal, with oponents thrown crashing to the mat, orpinned to it in one of Yamashita's viselike holds..
Among the facets of judo Yamashita finds most appealing, he says,
is “its violence.” The allure of judo's violent side for Yamashita is
undoubtedly enhanced by the fact that he is always on the giving, not
the receiving end. He has won 189 consecutive matches with the last
loss coming in 1977, when he was 19 years old.
That stretch includes 112 victories over foreigners. In fact, Yama
sh i ta has never lost to a foreigner.

That record, one of many he holds, is particularly satisfying and a
source of national pride in Japan, where judo was founded in 1882 by
Jigoro Kano as a refinement of its martial arts antecedent, jujitsu.
Yamashita has won the heavyweight class of the judo world cham
pionship, held at two-year intervals, three times: in Paris in 1979, in
Maastricht, the Netherlands, in 1981 and last October in Moscow. And
Yamashita - regarded as perhaps the finest judoka, or judo player, the
sport has ever produced —is unquestionably the closest thing Japan
will have to a guaranteed gold medalist at the Olympic Games at Los
