competed in the Second Ontario Japanese Speech Contest,
held on M^rch 31st at the U. of T. Faculty of Library Sciences
Building.
Opening remarks by Mrs. A., Maruoka, Program Coordina
tor, Japanese School of Continuing Studies, and greetings
from Dr. S. Shiftman, Liberal Studies Coordinator School of
Continuing Studies, University of Toronto, and Mr. Yuzo
Hatano, Consul-General of Japan opened the evening's
event.
Winners in the Beginner's Category were: (1st) — Lo, Kooi
Cheng, (2) — Kim Baumgartner, (3). Christina Lingam. Winners
in the Advanced Category were: (1) — Barbara Shenk (2) Timlin
Daniel (3) — Stuart Nose.
Judges were: Mr. Ken Mori, Publisher of The New Cana
dian; Rev. C.H. Powles, Trinity College, U. of T.; Prof. H. Chew,
York University; Mr. T. Iwasa, Board Chairman of J.C. Cultural
Centre; Mr. M. Ikeda, President, Mitsui & Co. (Canada).

and dances, the awards were presented by Consul General of
Japan, Yuzo Hatano.
