Four Nikkei to be honored by Japanese government
TORONTO — On the occasion of the Birthday of His Majesty the
Emperor of Japan, the Japanese government has announced the gran
ting of awards to two Canadians residing in Toronto, one in Winnipeg,
and one in Vancouver. The awards are in recognition of outstanding con
tributions which the recipients have made to mutual understanding
between the people of Japan and Canada.
The following are the names of the four award recipients and their
meritorious deeds:
Mrs. Teruko Ikeda: Sixth Class Order of the Precious Crown. Former
President of the Toronto Kisaragi Club, former Vice President of the
Toronto Japanese Canadian Citizen's Association (Issei-bu).
Mrs. Ikeda was granted the award for her contributions to the social
well-being of the Japanese Canadian community through her work with
the Kisaragi Club and the Toronto Japanese Canadian Citizen's Asso
ciation. She was also actively involved in volunteer work for the war
orphans of Kofuen Orphanage in Japan.
Mr. Sumiye Watanabe: Sixth Class Order of the Rising Sun. Former
President of the Toronto Buddhist Church, Vice President of the Toronto
Japanese Canadian Citizen's Association (Issei-bu), former Member
of the Board of Directors of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.
