EDMONTON. - A Japanese Canadian from Edmonton
has been signed to a multi-year contract by the New Jersey
Devils hockey club. He is 22-year old, Steve Tsujiura, a
5-foot-5,155 pounder who led the Springfield Indians Of the
American League in scoring last year with 24 goals and 56
assists in 78 games.
Born in Coaldale, Alberta, Steve was the Philadelphia
Flyers' 10th round pick in 1981.
The speedy scorer is also known in the Edmonton J.C.
community as a low handicap golfer and a Black Belt in
Judo.

EDMONTON, Alta. — A $125,000 grant to assist in devel
opment of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden in Devon, Alberta,
has been approved by Dick Johnston, the province's Minister
of Advanced Education.
The garden, part of the Devonian Botanical Garden, is
named in honour of the late Dr. Yuichi Kurimoto, founder of
the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Adminis
tration.
Dr. Kurimoto was the first Japanese national to graduate
from University of Alberta in 1930. He and his family have had
a continuing interest in the university and have presented
gifts to it on many occasions.
The Devonian Botanical Garden is a facility for the study
and appreciation of plants.
Missionary Anne Uchida
returns for Toronto visit

TORONTO. — Miss Anne Uchida, veteran missionary of
some twenty years of experience among the Japanese col
onists and native Brazilians of the Belem area, will visit the
Toronto area this month. Having spent some time studying
Japanese before she first landed in Brazil, she can now speak
three languages: English, Japanese and Portuguese.
Miss Uchida is the fifth daughter of the late Harry and Mrs.
S. Uchida, formerly of Summerland, B.C. Three of her older
sisters, Ikuye, Sachiye and Mary, are also serving as missiona
ries in Japan. Her brother, Akira, is also a pioneer missionary
in Fukui city.
