KAL flight 007 pilot misled
Jpnz. air traffic controllers
TOKYO. — The pilot of the
Korean Air Line jetliner shot
down by the Soviet fighters in
September 1983 misled To
kyo air controllers about his
altitude during the last min
utes before the fatal attack,
according to new data released
by the Japanese government
recently.
In a news conference, Yu
taka Hata, a member from the
ruling Liberal Democratic
Party, said the data also re
vealed that the pilot of the
Boeing 747 had taken the jet
liner off of automatic pilot
before the incident.
All 269 people aboard the
flight, bound for Seoul from
New York via Anchorage,
were killed.
The new document was is
sued in the name of Prime
Minister Yasuhiro Naksone
and was delivered in reply to
a formal query submitted by
Hata last month.
However, the Japan Asso
ciation for inquiry into the
truth of the KAL incident did
not offer possible reasons
why the pilot would have gi
ven wrong information to air
traffic controllers.
“The document endorses
the argument that self-de
fense force radar was probab
ly plotting the flight way be
fore the time (of attack),”
Hata said, referring to at least
three radar installations on
the northernmost main island
of Hokkaido mentioned in the
document.
“It is becoming clear that
the pilot must have had cer
tain intentions in flying the
plane,” instead of relying on
automatic navigation, he said.
After straying into Soviet
air space over the Kamchatka
peninsula and Sakhalin is
land for about five hours, KAL
flight 007 was shot down by a
missle fired by a Soviet jet
fighter in the early hours of
Sept. 1, 1983.
Researchers and govern
ments around the world have
advanced numerous theories
on the downed KAL jetliner,
ranging from multiple errors
in the computerized naviga
tion system to a deliberate
spy mission by the plane.
Since the flight and voice
recorders from the aircraft
were never reported found,
the deviation from its proper
course and the last minutes
have remained a mystery.
The new document includes
the Japanese government's
first official report on altitude
changes during KAL 007's
last 17 minutes, based on ra
dar records. It contradicts the
pilot's report to Tokyo air
traffic controllers.
According to official Japa
nese announcements in 1983,
KAL 007 was first spotted by
radar at 3:12 a.m. (1812 GMT
Aug. 31) and disappeared at
3:29 a.m. (1829 GMT) after the
attack.
New radar records show
that KAL 007 descended from
32,000 feet to 29,000 feet by
3:15, the exact minute-when
the pilot asked air controllers
for permission to climb to
35,000 feet from his reported
altitude of 33,000 feet.
After receiving clearance
from controllers at 3:20, the
pilot reported that the aircraft
was leaving the 33,000-foot
level and executing maneu
vers to reach 35,000 feet,
when he was actually at 29,000

KAL flight 007 pilot misled
Jpnz. air traffic controllers
TOKYO. — The pilot of the
Korean Air Line jetliner shot
down by the Soviet fighters in
September 1983 misled To
kyo air controllers about his
altitude during the last min
utes before the fatal attack,
according to new data released
by the Japanese government
recently.
In a news conference, Yu
taka Hata, a member from the
ruling Liberal Democratic
Party, said the data also re
vealed that the pilot of the
Boeing 747 had taken the jet
liner off of automatic pilot
before the incident.
All 269 people aboard the
flight, bound for Seoul from
New York via Anchorage,
were killed.
The new document was is
sued in the name of Prime
Minister Yasuhiro Naksone
and was delivered in reply to
a formal query submitted by
Hata last month.
However, the Japan Asso
ciation for inquiry into the
truth of the KAL incident did
not offer possible reasons
why the pilot would have gi
ven wrong information to air
traffic controllers.
“The document endorses
the argument that self-de
fense force radar was probab
ly plotting the flight way be
fore the time (of attack),”
Hata said, referring to at least
three radar installations on
the northernmost main island
of Hokkaido mentioned in the
document.
“It is becoming clear that
the pilot must have had cer
tain intentions in flying the
plane,” instead of relying on
automatic navigation, he said.
After straying into Soviet
air space over the Kamchatka
peninsula and Sakhalin is
land for about five hours, KAL
flight 007 was shot down by a
missle fired by a Soviet jet
fighter in the early hours of
Sept. 1, 1983.
Researchers and govern
ments around the world have
advanced numerous theories
on the downed KAL jetliner,
ranging from multiple errors
in the computerized naviga
tion system to a deliberate
spy mission by the plane.
Since the flight and voice
recorders from the aircraft
were never reported found,
the deviation from its proper
course and the last minutes
have remained a mystery.
The new document includes
the Japanese government's
first official report on altitude
changes during KAL 007's
last 17 minutes, based on ra
dar records. It contradicts the
pilot's report to Tokyo air
traffic controllers.
According to official Japa
nese announcements in 1983,
KAL 007 was first spotted by
radar at 3:12 a.m. (1812 GMT
Aug. 31) and disappeared at
3:29 a.m. (1829 GMT) after the
attack.
New radar records show
that KAL 007 descended from
32,000 feet to 29,000 feet by
3:15, the exact minute-when
the pilot asked air controllers
for permission to climb to
35,000 feet from his reported
altitude of 33,000 feet.
After receiving clearance
from controllers at 3:20, the
pilot reported that the aircraft
was leaving the 33,000-foot
level and executing maneu
vers to reach 35,000 feet,
when he was actually at 29,000
feet, according to radar.
