Yarmulke
By BILL MARUTANI
We recently attended a
burial in a Jewish cemetery
when 80-plus-year-old Ethel
Sporkin was laid to rest in a
moving and dignified cere
mony. Mrs. Sporkin was the
wife of longtime jurist Judge
Maurice W. Sporkin, and out
standing judge before whom
I've had the pleasure of ap
pearing as a trial attorney.
Judge Sporkin, nearing the
age of 90 years, was sorrow
fully unable to attend the
funeral, being hospitalized
from a recent stroke that he
suffered.
Just before the ceremonies
the weather appeared threa
tening, and to meet the con
tingency, two tents had been
erected in the cemetery. But
as the. people began to
gather, the sun broke through
the low clouds.
I find that; generally speak
ing, funerals are basically the
same whether they be Bud
dhist, Jewish, Protestant or
Roman Catholic. Each has its
own solemn dignity, although
the ceremony differs in vari
ous respects. For a Jewish
funeral service, whether it be
in a synagogue or in the open
cemetery, a head covering for
men is in order. I had forgot
ten my hat in the automobile
so I was given a yarmulke. In
a Roman Catholic church,
ladies cover their heads in
homage, often with a lace
shawl.
The f irst time I ever entered
a synagogue, as a mark of
respect for any house of wor
ship, I automatically removed
my hat as I entered. I quickly
determined that this was er
ror and put my hat back on.
I must admit that it took a
little getting used to, wearing
a hat during worship ser
vices. This was some years
ago when I attended (Jewish)

Japanese life span hits new high
TOKYO — The average life
span of Japanese men and
women increased in 1984,
making it once again the
longest in the world, accor
ding to a Health and Welfare
report issued recently.
Japanese women now live
an average of 80.18 years
while Japanese men live an
average of 74.54 years. Both
life spans grew when com

and Japanese women were
the first group in the world

of more that 80 years.
The life expectancy is cal

that the rate of death in that
year will not change in the
future. Before 1984 the record
length of life for Japanese
men was reached in 1982 at
74.22 years. Women hit a
record 79.78 years in 1983.
Those were also world
