organizations by Jelinek

VANCOUVER. — Multicul
tural grant cheques were pre
sented to two J.C. organiza
tions in Vancouver recently
by Otto Jelinek, Minister of
State for Multiculturalism.
They are the Gladstone Japa
nese Language School recei
ving $6,300 and Japanese
Language Class getting $1,135.
They are both under the An
cestral Language Japanese
Cultural Enrichment programs.
Mr. Jelinek said he was par
ticularly pleased to.be able to
meet with those directing the
projects. “These endeavors

VOL. 49 — NO. 96

There are so many of life's little
dilemmas. Like the “sandwich dilem
ma.” You know, the one where you
make a sandwich then can't decide
whether to cut it cross-wise, length
wise, or on the diagonal.
My weekly trips to the supermarket
are like that. My husband, Jesse,
can't understand why it takes me a
half-hour to an hour longer to shop
than it takes him. I try to
explain,“It's those little dilemmas.”
Every aisle is full of them . . . except
maybe in the pet food aisle. If we
owned a dog or a cat, that aisle
would be full of delemmas, too.
Even the simplest items call for
thoughtful decisions. I check my list.
It says “JUICE.” I roll my cart — the
wheels are in good working order de
spite the fact the cart looks worn
enough to have seen the Hoover ad
ministration — to the juice aisle. I' m
confronted by numerous dilemmas.
Juice in large cans, Juice in six-packs.
Juice made form concentrate. Juice
in foil containers. Juice in boxes with
only 10 percent real fruit juice. Juice
containing no juice at all.
“Mom reads all the labels, Dad,”
Stephanie tattles. Adolescent insur
rection, I reason. How else would I
know the main ingredient in J.P.'s
favorite cereal is sugar? Or that a
Hershey bar with almonds has the
same number of calories as a con
tainer of yogurt.
Occasionally, Jesse and I shop to
gether. It's always a test of wills. I
caution against purchasing the name
brand of granola bars. The kids like
them. They see the commercials. But
the house brand is less expensive
and has eight bars to a box instead of
six. Jesse doesn't admit it, but he's
impressed. Labels, I read labels.
They print the number of sheets on
a roll of toilet paper for a reason, so
people like me can unit-price. The
generic facial tissue might cost less,
but if you accidentally leave it in the
pocket of your slacks on wash day,
does it dissipate into a million pieces
and rain lint all over your laundry? Or
does it wad up into an unrecognizable
lump? If it wads up, it's the better
quality tissue and, in my book, worth
the few cents more.
A recent university study indicated
men shoppers spend less at the su
permarket than women because they
aren't impulse buyers. Jesse might
agree with them, but I say, “Hah!”
Who bought the Crunch ‘n’ Munch,
the soup ladle, and the rotating vita
min dispenser? Not I.
Of course, I did buy the bubble
pipe for J.P. and the cookie cutter in
the shape of a jack ‘o’ lantern that I
forgot to use this year and won't be
able to use until next year. And the
Gummy Dolphins . . . well, they're
new and I had to see if they tasted
like Gummy Bears.

Okay, so I also bought a pound of
chicken gizzards. If I could figure out
a way to prepare them, maybe my
family would aquire a taste for them.
And, yes, I'm the one who thought
freeze-dried tofu was a good idea.
“Uh, Jesse, how about coming to
the supermarket with me next week?”

— Rafu.

thering the concept of multi
culturalism as an integral part
of the Canadian identity.”
The projects reflect the in
terests and priorities of Van
couver's ethnocultural com
munities and cover: cultural
integration and enrichment;
the performing and visual
arts; language, writing and
publications and intercultural
communications.

“These projects will pro
duce a greater understanding
of the different ethnocultural
groups, their diversity, and
the richness of their cultural
background,” said Mr. Jelinek.

Golden Wedding Anniversary
TORONTO. — A reception in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Tadao
and Toshie Yokota was held on November 2, 1985 to com
memorate their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary, Nov. 3,
1935-85.
The occasion was celebrated with the gathering of some
95 relatives wishing them much happiness. The couple's
children, Stan Yokota, Mitch Kayama, Mary Ichikawa, Joan
Beaver, and David Yokota and their families, planned the
evening with photos and memories from early Kelowna, B.C.
days to their move to Toronto.
Mr. Bill Nakamura, eldest brother off Mrs. Toshie Yokota,
proposed a toast on behalf of all the relatives to the couple's
future happiness and health.

Scarboro Sansei makes great
wrestling come-back at S.F.U.
VANCOUVER. — Jack Ni
shikawa, a 24-year-old Scar
borough, Ontario native now
attending Simon Fraser Uni
versity, made a smashing
come-back recently in world
class wrestling as he helped
his S.F.U. team defeat the
visiting Japanese national
team 4-3 in a seven-match
card.
Nishikawa, touted as the
next world class wrestler to
emerge from S.F.U., was a upand-coming grappler back in
the early 80s when an motor
cycle accident stopped him
short.
His performaces on the mat
were so promising that he
was selected to the Canadian
national team when he was
barely out of his teens.
But, in the spring of ’82,
Nishikawa ran his motorcycle
into a roadside curb at high
speed and broke his left arm
and ankle. He was laid up for
almost a year and there were

serious doubts whether he
would ever wrestle competi
tively again.
“I couldn't wrestle for
almost 12 months and the
rehabilitation period has
been very long and very
slow,” Nishikawa said re
cently.
“My arm is still 10 degrees
off centre and I still don't

I thought he did exceptionally
well.”
Nishikawa, who's major
ing in psychology at SFU,
said he was pleased with the
win because he performed
poorly at the Canada Cup.
“I lost to a Cuban and a
Canadian in my first two mat
ches and, just like that, I was
out of the medal race,” he
said. “I was beginning to
lose some confidence in my
ability to come back. This
win tonight gives me a great
boost.”

kawa added. ‘‘I was dropped
from the national team after
the accident and now I'm
trying to earn my way back
on it.”
Pitted against Japan's Ka
zuhito Sakae — the world's
fifth-ranked wrestler in the
62-kiiogram weight division
— he scored an impressive
3 — 2 win before an apprecia
tive audience of 200 in SFU's
East gym.
“He (Sakae) is a world
class wrestler,” said SFU
coach Mike Jones, who's not
easily given to using that
often exaggerated adjective.
“That's why I was so pleased
for Jack. He's had a long lay
off with injuries and lost his
place on the national team.
He's worked very hard, to
build up his strength and
stamina. Considering this

JOYA NO KANE
As 1985 quickly draws to a close, many Canadians are
wondering how to bring in the new year.
Parties and
many gettogether without being caught by RIDE is the
usual plan for many.
How about bringing in the New Year with Jo—Ya—No—Kane,
the traditional ringing of the temple bell in Japan 108 strikes for 108 human misgivings?
In 1977 we
started the annual ringing of the Japanese Canadian
Centennial Bell at Ontario Place.
It is a novel way
start a new tradition for yourself.
Bring in with a
ring, Jo-Ya-No-Kane 1986.
Remember December 31st at Ontario Place. Assemble
at 11:30 p.m., and following a brief ceremony, we will
take turns ringing the Bell at approximately 11:50 to
culminate 108 strikes at 12:00 midnight.
There will
_ be ample parking at Ontario Place.
