CBC Radio callers
vote 2 to 1 for
J.C. compensation

Another
side of
prejudice
By Toyo Takata
The sun-tanned couple had
just returned form an invigor
ating vacation in Florida.
They were ecstatic about the
weather, the beach, the golf
ing, the people and everything
else about their two weeks
down south.
To top it off, they told us,
had an unexpected bonus on
their return flight to Toronto.
No longer had they been
seated, the stewardess in
vited them to move into the
first class section. They rea
dily accepted - free drinks,
wide aisle, plush seats and all
that. After they landed, they
thanked the stewardess, then
asked her why they received
the VIP treatment.
“Well,” she smiled back,
“You looked like such a nice,
kindly couple.” This kind of
preferential treatment is not a
rare occurence. I remember
that while awaiting a take-off
from the Calgary airport, the
purser tapped an immaculate
hakujin businessman seated
next to me for a similar “pro
motion” to first class. His va
cated seat was taken by a
young standby. Any time that
the airline has oversold the
economy class seats, and
there are empty seats in first
class, some select economy
passengers will be elevated.
Even if the economy class is
not full, but the first class is
practically empty, they will
do the same as a good public
relations gesture with the
hope that these choice pass
engers will select their airline
when they book their next tra
vel.
But would this happen to a
non-white “nice, kindly cou
ple?”
Or if you go to a theatre or a
ballpark, would you be assur
ed of getting the best seats
available in the price range
you sought? Do some ticket
sellers slough off undesira
ble ducats to unsuspecting
ethnics? You find yourself
with an obscured view while
there are empty seats and
you wonder if you've been
had. Or you check into a hotel
early and yet you end up with
a room farthest from the ele
vator, or the closest where
there is continual and noisy
traffic all night along the cor
ridor?
Let's say that you walk in(Continued on page 2)

Toronto City council gives
support to NAJC loss study
By NAJC correspondent
TORONTO. — Despite an
11th hour attempt by Jack Oki
and George Imai to “scotch”
a $5,000 grant to the NAJC,
Toronto City Council decided
to fund the NAJC's Price Wa
terhouse study on the losses
incurred by the community
because of the WWII intern
ments.
On May 28,1985, Oki & Imai
made a secret presentation
to a City Council Committee
saying that they represented
a “silent majority of Survi
vors” and were opposed to
the City's grant to the NAJC
as cost-conscious tax payers.
Oki & Imai claimed many
Toronto JO organizations and
JC Churches as the suppor
ters of their position. How
ever, the NAJC Toronto Chap
ter, presented letters from
the Ministers and from the JC
organizations involved, in
which they stated clearly that
Oki-Imai were not their
spokesmen.
On Aug. 12, 1985, Toronto
City Council firmly backed
the NAJC by passing unani
mously the following motion:
“Toronto City Council recom
mends:

1. That the Federal Govern
ment be urged to begin nego
tiations in good faith with the
JC community to award them
individual compensation for
loss incurred by seizure of
their property.
2. That the Federal Govern
ment be urged to deal with
and successfully conclude
the negotiations by the cur
rent session.
3. That City Council grant
$5,000 to the NAJC for the
specific purpose of contribu
ting to a fund for the assess
ment and quantification by
the Association of the dam
ages suffered and financial
redress sought; and the City
of Toronto communicate with
all members of the Federa
tion of Canadian Municipali
ties urging them to accept
the urgency of the situation
and make appropriate contri
butions immediately.”
The $5,000 cheque and the
City's best wishes were con
veyed publically to the NAJC
in a formal presentation at
the 38th Annual NAJC confer
ence in Toronto on November
10,1985 by Toronto Aiderman
Michael Walker to NAJC Pre
sident, Art Miki.

By BILL KOBAYASHI
TORONTO. — Callers re
sponding to CBC's Radio
Noon program on Japanese
Canadian Redress voted 2-to
1 in favor of compensation for
the injustices suffered by
JCs during World War Two.
The program was aired on
December 5th with Multicul
turalism Minister Otto Jeli
nek inviting opinions from
the listeners.
Host, David Schatzky ask
ed the question: “Is it an in
sult to pay Japanese Canadi
ans for what they suffered
during World War Two? Is it,
as Mr. Jelinek says, too ex
pensive? Do they deserve
more than an apology?”
In an introductory com
ment, well-known Japanese
Canadian personality, David
Suzuki declared, “In terms of
the insult, I hope that he (Mr.
Jelinek) has consulted a lot
of Japanese Canadians so
that he understands what
would or would not insult Japanese Canadians. My own
feeling is, that's for us to
decide, not for him and the
fact that a large part of the
Japanese Canadian commu
nity has in fact been seeking
compensation would suggest
to me that they wouldn 't feel
insulted at all were the gov
ernment to decide to give a fi
nancial compensation.”
One of the many callers to
reject Mr. Jelinek's position
was a Nisei from Oakville
who related a sad tale of a
family destroyed as a result
of the incarceration of her
father and the loss of a busi
ness. “The suffering still
goes on,” she said.
Many Japanese Canadians
calling the designated phone
number during the program
were not able to get through.
However, Mr. George Imai
was aired supporting Mr. Jeli
nek's positon to which the
minister replied, “I'm cer
tainly delighted to hear that
that gentleman is supportive
of what we are trying to do.”
(One woman caller, with a
typical B.C. WASP mentality
from the 1940's era, sugges
ted that the evacuation was
the fault of the Issei and Ni
sei fishermen, who “were
known to have installed high
speed, German-made mo
tors” in their boats! Even Mr.
Jelinek had to chuckle over
that caller's silly red-neck at-

tempt to connect the JCs
with some sort of fifth column
activity.)
The last caller from Hamil
ton, Ontario was representa
tive of the many callers dis
puting the minister's posi
tion when he said: “The high
handedness of Mr. Jelinek's
statement to effect that I am
not going to or we're not go
ing to offer any compensation
to these people without actu
ally letting them make the in
dividual decision to say that
this person wants to ask for
compensation, this one feels
that it's an insult or some
thing and doesn't want to
ask for compensation, it
seems to me that the oppor
tunity should be open for
them to make the individual
decision to do it, instead of
having somebody highhandely, in the same high
handed manner as this blot
on our history that the War
Measures Act is.”

To this sympathetic caller,
host Scharzky asked, “Not
that it makes all that much
difference, sir, but are you a
Japanese Canadian or not?”
The answer was, “No, not
even my friends, ancestry or
anything.”

The final total against Mr.
Jelinek's proposal, including
George Imai's, was more
than two to one in favor of
compensation.

of the 100th anniversary of Ja

recently attended by Gover

In the ceremonies, Hawaii's
Japanese community offered
its gratitude to 23 non-Japanese who fought for equal
rights in the islands since the
first Japanese contract labor
ers arrived to work the planta
tions.
“These people often acted
against the grain of peer pres
sures and were willing to
stick their necks out to alle
viate racial prejudices,” said
Ted Tsukiyama, chairman of
the governor's selection
committee.
“The Japanese people of
Hawaii could not have attain
ed the success of the last 100
years without the acceptance
and aloha of all the other peo
ple of Hawaii with their vari

Of the 23 people formally
recognized, only two are still
living and were presented
with commemorative plaques.
Dr. Andrew Lind, 84, a re
tired sociology professor at
the University of Hawaii, was
feted for his role in analyzing
race relations in the islands.
