“Silliest thing I have heard in all my life,” says Shoyama

1942 secret report accuses The N.C.
and Shoyama of subversive activities

By VIC OGURA
Roger Smith, chairman of
General Motors U.S., told this
story recently: Two hikers
are being chased by an angry
bear. One of them stops to
put on a pair of sneakers.
Breathless, his companion
yells: “You crazy, you think
you can outrun the bear with
those on?” His companion
resolutely responds, “I' m not
trying to outrun the bear, just
you!”
Evacuation had split the
community. Now redress was
ironically and tragically doing
the same. And now, as the
day of reckoning approaches,
it is indeed both hilarious and
sad to see the conspirators
try to outrun each other.
Roy Miki was smart enough
to see that he needed two
elements to control the NA
JC. (a) the gullibility of
enough delegates to win the
votes, and (b) enough mini
mal support from Toronto to
create dissension in Cana
da's largest JC community.
He got both through per
sistence and capitalizing on
human frailties.
Gordon Kadota, the presi
dent of the NAJC in 1983,
read Roy early in the game.
In a succint note to all dele
gates across Canada, Kadota
wrote: “This group has taken
a position on redress and has
circulated material across Canada. This group is NOT part
of the NAJC and does not
represent the position of the
NAJC.”
Shortly thereafter, a na
tional meeting was called in
Toronto to define the future
of redress. (Prior to that
meeting, Roy and his busy
beavers were soliciting proxy
votes.) That meeting in Tor
onto ended in disgrace. Out
talking a compromise motion
composed by Harold Hirose,
Art Miki, Roger Obata and
myself, Roy was able to turn
that Labor Day weekend
meeting into a farce.
A few months later, however, in January 1984 in Win
nipeg, an NAJC national con
ference, much to Roy's chag
rin, reconfirmed their support
for the National
Redress
Committee, and clearly man
dated unanimously a redress
platform as follows’ First,
obtain an acknowledgement
of an injustice from the Gov
ernments Second, begin ne
gotiations on compensation,

WINNIPEG. — The writings of The New Canadian colum
nist, the late Murial Kitagawa has been compiled and edited
by Mr. Roy Miki in a book entitled “This is my Own: “Letters
To Wes & Other Writing On Japanese Canadians.”
At the heart of the book are Muriel's letters to her brother
Wes Fujiwara, a medical school student in Toronto. Every few
days from December 1941 to May 1942 she wrote to keep him
informed of developments in B.C., and to document, for her
self and her community, the events of this frightening and
chaotic period.
She tells Wes about the “Japs Keep Out” signs on the
roads, the squalor in the Hastings Park Manning Pool where
Japanese Canadians were held pending internment, the humi
liation of the curfew, the horor of being forced to sell posses
sions that had taken a lifetime to earn, the fear that accom
panied each new order-in-council — and through it all, the
shock and disbelief at the absolute betrayal by a “demo
cratic” government.
Some articles Muriel wrote during the 1940s after her fami
ly moved to Toronto accompany the letters. In these pieces,
