the Canadian Amateur Sports Hall of Fame.

Mondale endorses
U.S. Nikkei redress
SAN FRANCISCO. — For-,
mer Vice President Walter
Mondale signed a letter sup
porting Japanese American
Citizens League's effort to
remedy the wartime constitu
tional violations by the United
States Government against
civilians of Japanese ance
stry. Mr. Mondale, respond
ing to a personal request by
JACL National President
Frank S. Sato, offered per
sonal support to the JACL's
redress effort in the form of a
letter to his own supporters
from his presidential cam
paign.
The Vice President 's letter
to his supporters had even
stronger language. In des
cribing the wartime injustice
directed against Americans
of Japanese ancestry, he
wrote, “It was an act without
justification. Every investiga
tion before and after Pearl
Harbor had concluded that
the Japanese American com
munity posed no military
threat.” In another part of
his letter, Mr. Mondale wrote,
“It wasn't because of war
that Japanese Americans
were forcibly imprisoned, it
was because of racism and
greed.” His text went on to
urge signing a petition
directed to President Reagan,
and even urging his sup
porters to join the Japanese
American League as mem
bers to concretize their sup
port.

Rep. Matsui calls for use of “Jpn.”
Jan.” as abbreviation
instead of “Jap.
WASHINGTON D.C.- Rep.
Robert T. Matsui (DCA.) has
cosponsored legislation to
have Congress encourage the
use of the term “Jpn.” in
stead of “Jap” as the abbre
viation for Japan or Japa
nese.
“The term “Jap” has racist
and derogatory connotations
that should not be counte
nanced in our society,” Mat
sui said. “But unfortunately,
it has recently resurfaced
in statements by prominent

persons and by respected
publications.”
U.S. dictionaries almost
uniformly define the term as
a derogatory reference to per
sons of Japanese ancestry,
Matsui said.
“While it is almost impos
sible to prevent bigoted per
sons from slurring others, it
is important to educate wellintentioned persons,” Matsui
said. “This legislation is an
important step toward remov
ing this slur from use.”

McCain Foods expanding in Japan
HALIFAX, N.S. — Frozen French
fries from McCain Foods Ltd. are
surfacing in Tokyo grocery stores
for the first time this month as the
New Brunswick food processor goes
after a bigger bite of the Japanese
market.
Japanese consumers have been
able to munch McCain french fries at
fast-food outlets for years, but now
they can buy them at the grocer in
several cities.
McCain already supplies several
fast-food operators in Japan, in
cluding multinationals McDonald's
Corp, and Dairy Queen and domestic
chains such as Lotteria — the largest

Japanese-owned fast food company
— as well as several smaller insti
tutional users.
The recent announcement of the
expansion in the Japanese market
marks the food processor's first
attempt to sell directly to the con
sumer rather than to the institutional
market. McCain has exported to Ja
pan for more than 12 years and last
year sold 7,000 tonnes of potato pro
ducts to the island country.
McCain, based in Florenceville,
N.B., is introducing four varieties
of french fries to Japanese grocery
stores, as well as frozen hash
browns.

Adachi wins national award
TORONTO. — The Toronto Daily
Star's literary editor, Ken Adachi, 57,
was a winner in the 1985 National
Newsoaoer Awards which signify rec
ognition of outstanding Canadian jour
nalism. He was a winner in the category
for critical writing.
Adachi's $1,000. cash prize is funded
by a group of Canadian newspapers and
administered by the Toronto Press
Club.

VANCOUVER. — The sailassisted Japanese freighter
Usuki Pioneer will be in Van
couver and open to Expo visi
tors for three days in July,
says the ship's Vancouver
agent.
The 26,000-dead-weightton ship, which carries two
320-square-metre computercontrolled sails, is making its
maiden visit to Vancouver.
Carl Jacobsen, vice-presi
dent of Vanport Shipping
Agencies Ltd, of West Van
couver, said arrangements
have been made with Expo to
have the Usuki Pioneer berth
ed at Canada Place, along
with the Japanese Tall ship
Nippon Maru, from July 18 to
21.
Marine commerce week —
one of Expo's special theme
periods — begins July 21.
“It should be quite a sight,
an original sailing ship and a
modern sailing ship side by
side,” said Jacobsen.
He said the public will be
welcome aboard Usuki Pion
eer, which he described as
the first of the second gener
ation of sail-assisted ships.
Her sail area is almost
twice that of the Aqua City,
which las year was the first of
the Japanese ocean-going
sailing freighters to visit Van
couver.
Jacobsen said the fuel sav
ing on the Usuki Pioneer has
been on average 35 to 40 per
cent, depending on winds.
“Until we had these latest
fuel price reductions that was
a substantial saving,” he add
ed. “At the time she was built
in 1984 the fuel price in Japan
was $180 U.S. per tonne.”
A conventional diesel-pow
ered freighter of 26,000 dwt
would burn 15 to 20 tonnes of

fuel per day. On the Usuki
Pioneer it has been as low as
8.4 tonnes.
Built by Usuki Ironworks
Ltd. in 1984, the ship is own
ed by Tanaka Industries Ltd.
and operated by Uni Shipping
of Japan.

New Drug for
autistic children
TOKYO. — A research group spon
sored by the Japan Health and Wel
fare Ministry said recently it has
developed for the first time in the
world a drug which is effective for
treatment of autistic children.

The drug is called R-THBP (tetra
hydrobiopterin). R-THBP, a coenzyme,
is indispensible for enzymes for pro
duction of catechol amine, a sub
stance to carry instructiona through
nerves.
The lack and a lower level of RTHBP lead to spasms and other symp
toms which are often seen with
autistic children.
The group, which began studies on
R-THBP in 1980, has developed a for
mula for producing the substance in
volume and tested it with animals.
The drug, after entering the brain of
animals, increased the production of
cathecol amine to two to four times
the normal level.
Then, the drug was tested with 17
autistic children and it turned out very
effective for six of them, effective for
five and slightly effective for four. It
had no effect with the remaining two
children.
The drug is expected to open the
way for establishing a drastic method
of treatment for autism.
