David Suzuki . . .
“. .. hey, but |
someone has
to do it!”
By GEORGE YOSHINAGA
Let's face it.
When one writes a column
covering a myriad of subjects
from aardvark to zyrhurgy (the
first and last words in Web
sters'), it doesn't surprise
me that there are readers who
don' t share the same point of
view that I do.
In fact, if I score 50-50, I'd
say I was being generous to
myself as far as believing that
half of the readers agree with
me and the other half does
not.
But, 50-50 ain't that hot
when you come to think of it,
if that is the ratio of people
who agree with this column.
That means that every
other person who is tuned in
to this channel thinks that I
have a few screws loose.
However, it has always
been the policy of this col
umn to allow anyonewho dis
agrees with my philosophy or
with what appears in this col
umn to present their side in
the form of a letters-to-thecolumn.
Unfortunately, a large num
ber of Nikkei who do not
agree do not generally sit
down to respond in writing.
Perhaps they get too emo
tional to put their thoughts
down on paper.
Whatever the reason, most
of them have to get on the
phone to start a one-on-one
confrontation.
This may allow them to get
their grip “off their chest,”
but it ieally doesn't bring
“their side of the story,” to
the public, to counter what
they may have felt was a un
fair piece of writing in this
column.
We don't accept one-toone phone calls. Our advise
is, “write in and I'll be more
than happy to print your
views.”
The problem to one-to-one
confrontations is that it
doesn't lead to anything but
a shouting match.
The other thing which some
readers resort to is to call the
publisher.
These kinds of people are
the most annoying to me
because they think they want
to address their problem to a
“higher authority.”
What I write belongs to me
and if anyone has anything
they want to say about what I
have written, they should
