By SHERRI HORVAT
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — The
Convention Centre at the El
Rancho had standing room
only recently with about 500
people attending Bunka No
Hi, or Japanese Culture Day.
Before opening ceremonies,
the public had a chance to
sample authentic Japanese
food, including sushi.
On hand for the opening
were Deputy Mayor Bob
Tarleck, Japanese ConsulGeneral Mamoru Funakoshi
from Edmonton, and former
mayor Andy Anderson and
his wife Rheta.
Co-ordinator of the event,
Lilly Oishi, introduced master
of ceremonies Mas Sunada,
who presented the Ander
sons with a clock from Japan,

in recognition of their contri
butions to Japanese culture

The couple was recognized
for their warmth, vision and
dedication to the Japanese
community “not only as
mayor, but as a concerned
citizen as well.” A young
Japanese girl in a kimono
presented Mrs. Anderson with
a floral tribute on behalf of
the Japanese Canadian Soci
ety.
The opening ceremony in
cluded Japanese singing and
dancing, as well as a
demonstration of fighting
with bamboo sticks. Two
dances were performed as
they are in Japan each July 7,
for the Star Festival. This is
when, according to legend,
two stars who are lovers meet
from across the Milky-Way.
Children believe at that
time their wishes may come
true if they are written down
on paper and hung on a
special tree.
After the demonstrations
were over, people were free
to wander among the many
exhibits and displays, partici
pating if they wished.
The line-ups were longest
in front of the calligraphy
table and the Japanese paper
folding exhibit. At the
calligraphy exhibit, people
crowded in and waited to
have their names written in
Japanese characters with ink
brush writing. A long line of
children participated in the
paper folding, taking their
creations with them after
wards.
The Bonseki, or sand-paint
ing exhibit, also attracted
great interest, as Japanese

DATES & DOINGS
Young People's “No Frills Dance
TORONTO. — The J.C.C Centre is again having a “No
Frills” Dance for young people on Saturday, December 27th.
What better way to spend an evening than to come to the
Centre? Nothing can compete with what we have to offer.
Admission is $3.00 per person. By “No Frills” we mean
literally “No Frills”. You don't have to go out and spend a
fortune on a gown. Come in your everyday clothes. This is
acceptable. Just enjoy yourself with your peers. “Jeans” will
not be allowed.
One thing we will not tolerate and that is behaviour prob
lems. If you cannot conduct yourself according to the normal
behavior code, you will be booted out.
Music will be contemporary young people's music. So,
dance away the evening. Time — 8 p.m. to midnite. Gather
vour friends and come to the Centre. See you then!

Live monkeys reportedly used
in simulated crashes in Japan
TOKYO. — A series of car crash
experimentss sponsored by the Ja
pan Automobile Research Institute
used live monkeys, according to a re
cent newsletter issued by the Inter
national Primate Protection League.

Officials at the research institute
recently declined comment, saying
they were still investigating the
charges.
The IPPL newsletter said the ex
periments were conducted over a
seven-year period beginning in 1974
and were carried out by the research
institute in collaboration with two
Japanese universities.

In one experiment, 12 Japanese
monkeys and one baboon, their
heads fixed in place by iron frames
and plaster of paris, were crashed
into a concrete wall while under light
anesthesia, the newsletter said.

until “the number of blows applied
to 18 monkeys was 74 in total,” it
said.

“The research on primates des
cribed in Japanese medical journals
would not be permissible in other
countries,” said John Hollman, a
Tokyo representative of the conser
vation group Friends of the Earth.
“Awareness among scientists and
the public in Japan is nowhere near the level of other countries, parti
cularly the United States and Europe.
As a result there is no pressure to
reform treatment of animals for
medical research,” he said in a
telephone interview recently.
