WINNIPEG. — The Mani
toba JCCA has voted to re
lease funds up to $20,000
toward a building, the
MJCCA “Outlook” reported
recently.
The idea of a Japanese
community cultural Centre or
building in Winnipeg has
been discussed for many
years. Recently the MJCCA
was approched by the se
niors' group, the Horizons,
with a request that a building
be attained to accommodate
the need for a centre where
their group and other commu
nity groups could hold acti
vities.
The Manitoba JCCA has
set up a'board of directors to
meet concerning this issue.
Board members are: Art Miki
(chair), Harold Hirose, Alan
Hirota, Hiro Hashi moto, Thelma Koj i ma, FI ore nceMi tans,
Bob Mukai, Howard Omoto,
Stan Osaka, Theresa Oye,
Tom Shimoji, Jim Suzuki, Yo
shinori Tsutsumi and Lucy
Yamashita.
The “Outlook” says “this
committee has examined the
needs of the community and
identified possible user
groups. A long range and
short range plan have been
established.
Short Range
To meet the immediate
needs of the community,
committee members are
presently actively searching
for a rental facility of approx
imately 2,000 square feet.
This space would be divided
and used (a) for a meeting
room (approx. 350 sq. ft.) with
tables, chairs, filing cabinets,
etc.) (b) fora lounge area (ap
prox. 150 sq. ft. with couches,
chairs, small tables, book
cases, audio visual equip
ment, coffee making equip
ment, etc. This could be used
for small meetings as well as
for informal get-togethers, (c)
for an activity area (approx.
800-900 sq. ft.) (d) for storage
(e) washroom facilities. The
committee is planning the
management of the facility
and programming that could
be instituted. To date, those
definitely committed to the
establishment of a commu
nity building are the MJCCA
and the Horizons group. The
members of the building

In the Heian period, the Kamakura princes looked to the Middle Kingdom
for inspiration
Drawing their urban outlines from the more ancient cities,

Glyn M. Onizuka
Barrister &
Solicitor

For the Chinese were the elite and their characters,
Formed the writing style for the males.
This kanjl - bulky, cumbersome and foreign - the males were
scholars its use.
And the females who could use the simple script
Found that it drew their imagination to describe
The life of the shining prince, and to carve out the intricate love tanka;

425 University Avenue
Suite 201

Telephone:

598-2002

Ever filled with allusions, never direct, the petal, the stalk, the fragrance,
the color and texture;
Describing a world of love assignations, always while the poor,
Yes, the poor were simply never alluded to.
Even while the Minamoto Prince Genji was ostracized;

Living in the grim hut by the seashore, far from his Murasaki,
his purple, his little one.
He is ever the gallant that remembers the political life of the city,
And swoons because he is so far removed.
It was after all a Lady Murasaki who captured it.
Attendant to the Empress, brilliant yet living in the shadows,
And only in the shadows could the world of the shining prince blossom.
I have such thoughts like these as I view my elderly ones
Who have not read the Tsurezuregusa or the Pillow Book or the
Genji Monogatari.

But I mind not for even in this city there is a bit of the Heian,
And the first minister of the right jockies against the second
minister of the left.
And sometimes the concubine's newborn must be moved.
Oh, no, we do not have the sexual doctrines of the Heian,

But we are getting there. Genji's men did not pay for their liaison,
They sent gifts instead, and poetry, written for the moment,
For sexual delight is but of the moment,
But the remorse or the remembered joy but a lifetime more.

Marcia
Matsui

But our children are seduced by the lights of Mitsubishi and Canon,
And the computer lifestyles that makes me feel so primitive,
because I have no VCR. But no matter,
It gives me more time to reflect, and to write poetry.

Barrister & Solicitor

There are now, as then, many strange liaisons,
And we strain to hear an authentic voice;
We shudder at the television prophets who mesmerize us
And force our pocketbooks out without a thought.

But we who claim our roots in a far country,
Who have lost our elder's tongue, and our memories
Store only stories about a distant war
That caused our elders to lose their Heian, their peace.
We long for a Nichiren, who will without reserve call the balls and strikes,
Who will tell us that sins do exist, that we are enmeshed in them,
That they are not found only at the Censor Board
Or in the infightings and squabbles of our redress movement.

Will our Nichiren point to enemy ships that surely will come,
And blow us till skin leaves the bones, and the bones are no more.
And we are simply shadows on the pavement.
Praise the pavement for having survived to record!
But we only chant from across both sides of Bathurst,
And we act fearlessly as iff there would be myriads off tomorrows.
Yet we forget that Nichiren eventually retired into the wilderness,
Into the hermitage where prayers and meditations were his daily bread.

And Nichiren's prophecies were fulfilled, for enemy ships did come,
And falling upon the tiny islands, those ships meant for
Nichiren's retribution,
Will they be dispersed by some divine wind? And the only wind
we can think of
Is the wind that follows the mushroom cloud, which comes with
black rain.

Yet we continue our squabbles, never giving thought to the future,
and our children’
But I like those who tend their gardens, and turn their soil;
For in a few quiet moments, they draw the lines that will give us
once more,
A tanka, haiku, a glimps into our own peace.
