TORONTO. — On January
24th I attended the funeral of
my wife's uncle, Sumio Sora.
The day was bitterly cold and
windy, even the trip from
the parking lot to the church
was uncomfortable. But the
church was full. Countless
flowers arranged behind the
pulpit swept down in tiers
toward the people who had
come to pay respects.
The hymns were sung with
reverence. The eulogies were
simple, clear and profound.
The pastor read a poem
found in one of Sumi's
drawers at home. The poem
concerned the vagaries of
Time and the final line went:
But for those who love —
Time is not.
There was much love,
much sorrow in that church.
Sumi's family followed the
casket to the door and stood
by while pallbearers accom
panied it to the hearse. The
funeral ended.
I looked around the crowd
ed foyer for the eyes of family
and friends but for many
minutes those eyes were lost
to sorrow. They were indivi
duals leaning against walls
with eyes closed; individuals
staring bleakly through glass
doors at a long black car with
curtained windows. A trea
sured life had passed through
the doors and left them void,
empty and helpless.
The reason I am writing
now is because I was mis
taken. Those minutes in the
foyer were just a breath
gathering. Sumi's spirit is
the Sora family spirit and his
passing seemed to infuse
them with a love and caring
that is extraordinary in the
truest sense. I'm writing be
cause at times like this I can
not contain my feelings of ad
miration and gratefulness for
this spirit. We all have it. But
many of us tend to lose it,
to become anxious and with
drawn, not just for bleak
moments in the foyer of a
church, but for much of our
lives. Sumi passed on but he
passed his spirit for life on to
his family and this spirit gives
them the strength to pass it
on to others. So the circle
widens.
I did not intend to eulogize
