“Dokushin

sweeping
Japan
TOKYO. — This is the era
of the dokushin kizoku or
bachelor aristocrats, if the
results of a recent study by
a market research firm are
any indication.
Marplan Japan, headed by
long-time Japan resident Ro
bert Wilk, conducted a survey
known as “The New Singles”
for many of its corporate
clients. The survey covered
in-depth responses by 1,000
randomly selected single
men and women between the
ages of 20 and 39.
The study covered values,
lifestyles, family relation
ships, money, leisure, work,
entertainment, and a host of
other areas.
“We found five clear cate
gories,” said Wild. “The big
gest group, accounting for 25
percent, are achievers, then
independents (22 percent),
conservatives (21) percent),
followers (20 percent), and
loners (11 percent).”
Who are these people?
Achievers are mostly welleducated, mostly male, usu
ally students or free-lancers,
live with families in big
houses but would prefer to
live alone. They are socia
ble, adventurous and trend
setters.
Independents are generally
male, often the last child in
big families and apartment
dwellers.
Conservatives are white
collar with more than an
average number of professio
nals and specialists. They
have traditional values and
believe in hard work and the
merit system.
Followers are quite young,
largely females and office
workers, typical office ladies.
Loners are the poorest edu
cated, working in the service/labor sector. Often the
middle child of large families,
they live alone but don't
especially like to. Passive
and apathetic, this group has
much older, maiden secre
taries.
Among some of the trends
observed, said Wilk, are the
following:
• Young people are chosing to stay single longer
because it's “difficult to get
married, better off financial
ly to stay single and trouble
some to look for a spouse.”

Jpnz. skater wins sprint title
STE. FOY, Que. — Japan's
Akiro Kuroiwa's second-place
finish in the recent 500-metre
event clinched the over-all
world sprint speed skating title
for him at Ste-Foy, Quebec.
Kuroiwa overtook Nick Thometz of the U.S. for the all
round title. Another Japanese
skater, Yukihiro Mitani was
third. Canada's top skater,
Gaetan Boucher was 15th.

Jpnz.search for Noah's Ark
TOKYO. — Former U.S. as
tronaut Col. James Irwin will
join the Japanese Internation
al Research Committee on
Bibleland (IRCB) which will
search for Noah's Ark.
Irwin said that although he
is greatly interested in ac
companying the IRCB search
ers, he will only do so “if that
would be wise for the expedi
tion.”
Irwin, who has already
made five visits to Mt. Ararat
in Turkey in search of the
Ark's remains, said that al
though his role in the Japa
nese project has yet to be
clearly defined, he expects to
serve as a “consultant” or
“adviser.”
The IRCB is a Tokyo-based
organization that was found
ed with the goal of finding
Noah's Ark. Members of the
committee include archaeol
ogists and assorted specia
lists from Japan as well as
the British Museum and the
University of California.
Whereas Irwin said that for
him the search for the ark, “is
really a search for God,” an
IRCB official stated that “we
do not have any religious
reasons for our search.”
NEW DELHI: — Sansei ge

Soviet physicist Nikolai Ba

The annual Kalinga prize,
instituted in 1951, comme

TOKYO — Casio Computer
Co. announced it will begin
marketing next June an elect
ronic still camera and option
al printer, which will sell for
about 100,000 yen and 200,000 yen, respectively.
The camera, which uses a
50-picture~ 2-inch erasable
magnetic disc rather than
film to record pictures, also
has a playback function that
will allow users to display
pictures on television or
video screens.
Casio said the camera
measures 9x10x16 centi
meters (about 3.1 x 3.9 x 6.3
inches), weighs 960 grams
(about 2 lbs.) batteries includ
ed, and can take pictures at
a rate of five per second.
Although electronic still
cameras were announced in
1981, only one Japanese
maker, Canon Inc., has put
a model on sale. However,
Canon's model, which was
announced in July, is an expensive version aimed at
newspaper photographers.
Casio has thus become the
first Japanese maker to an
nounce a system for home
users. The company said it
plans to produce the new
camera at an annual rate of
10,000 units.
