Machine “insults” J.C.
Prof, of computer design
VANCOUVER. — Robert Ito was insulted. His automatic
teller machine was not only rude, it was malfunctioning.
“I'm quite, insulted when machines behave that way,”
he said.
• While the machine merrily recorded a $130 debit to Ito's
account internally, it flatly refused to spit out the money.
“This is an invalid transaction,” it said — as if Ito were
making the mistake. A professor of computer assisted design
at the University of B.C., Ito was affronted. He knew he had
done his part.
Ito tried again and got his money, but the machine record
ed two debits on his account. The same thing happened a
couple of weeks later. When Ito tried to transfer money be
tween accounts, the machine rejected Ito's instructions at
the customer terminal, but recorded the transfer in the main
computer.
The problem is a timer in the customer terminal, Ito said.
The terminal automatically shuts down after a specified
period — probably to keep customers from taking too long
on the machine — but when this happens, the terminal fails
to notify the main computer that the transaction was stopped.
Jess Maher, computer services officer for B.C. Teachers
Credit Union (where Ito's account is), said the timer is a
security device. She did, however, acknowledge Ito's pro
blem. “It's not a situation that comes up on a regular basis.
It has happened before. We are investigating the problem,”
she said.
Secretary of State launches
Multicultural advertising campaign
TORONTO. — Secretary of
State David Crombie, Mini
ster Responsible for Multiculturatism, recently an
nounced the launch of a TV,
radio and newspaper adver
tising campaign in the ethnic
and mainstream media on the
theme, “Canada — This is My
Home.”
Mr. Crombie said, “The
campaign will highlight the
fact that multiculturalism is
no longer a concept that
stands alone, but rather is
now part of the whole fabric
of our society. Multicultura
lism is at the heart of our
Canadian identity.
In the year in which we are
celebrating the 40th anniver
sary of Canadian citizenship,
it is appropriate that we
recognize that our society is
no longer composed of “two
solitudes, and others” but of
a family of citizens equal in
all respects.
We want also to emphasize
and encourage good citizen
ship, in the sense of being ac
tive participant in the affairs
of the community and the
country — you don't have to
be a native born, or natura
lized, Canadian to be a good
citizen — even the newest ar
rival can have a significant
and valid contribution to make
to his or her community.”
The campaign will begin
immediately in the ethnic
media and in late March in
the mainstream media out
lets.

TORONTO. — A highly
successful Karaoke tour of
Japan was enjoyed by mem- ,

Karaoke Club. A group of 29
persons left for Japan on Oc

of sightseeing and karaoke
singing.
The highlights of the tourwas the “karaoke nights”
sponsored by the “Al Nippon
Karaoke Association” when
the Toronto singers joined
with 60 singers from Tokyo
in Shinjuku and in Hiroshima
where over 135 singers from
Western Japan (Hiroshima,
Kyoto, Tottori-ken, Kita
Kyushu) sang with them in
a gala evening of Karaoke.
Everyone was delighted when
professionals, Yashio Ayako
(RCA), Kitami Kiyoko (Colum

their latest recorded hits. In
Shinjuku they were especial
ly favored when the veteran
singing star, Dick Mine came
to meet the Toronto group
and sang the songs for which
he has become famous. Gifts
were exchanged as memen

ings.
The Karaoke Singers saw
many of the places romaticized in Japanese enka, sing
ing the songs of the places
they visited in the Karaoke
bus — Yagiri no watashi,
Shinjuku, Ginza Akasaka, Dotombori, Soe moncho, Nagaragawa, Kiso-gawa etc. They
enjoyed especially the Ryokans and hot springs where
after ofurc and sumptuous Ja
panese meals they relaxed
and took part in karaoke sing
ing in huge tatami banquet
rooms.
At the famed NKH Hall the
members were thrilled to
hear most of Japan's top
recording stars sing the best
compositions of 1986 (Sakushi Taiso Show) and in Shin
juku's Koma Theatre enjoyed
the Yashiro Aki Show as she
acted in a jidai-geki drama
and later sang all of her re
corded hit songs. The fellows
especially enjoyed the Taka
razuka All Girl Revue.
Sightseeing included two
of the three most famous
scenic spots in Japan —
Amano Hashidate, Kiso gawa.

Japanese investors pump

KITCHENER, Ont. — Three
Japanese car plants worth
almost $1 billion being built
in Ontario are just a ripple in
the tsunami — tidal wave —
of Japanese investment in
Canada, says a report on the
cash flowing between the
two countries.
More than $17 billion has
poured into Canada from Ja
panese investors, mainly over
the last six years, whiIe Cana
dian government and Crown
corporations owe debts of
almost $11 billion in the form
of Japanese loans and bonds.
“Canada is perceived as
a politically very stable, re
source rich nation with a
highly developed infrastruc
ture and a well educated
labor force,” says the 73-page
report released recently by
the Canada-Japan Council,
a 500-member organization
based in Ottawa.
Besides direct trade worth
$7 billion each year between
the two countries, Japan In
vestors are pumping billions
of their own hard-earned yen
into Canadian government
bonds, says the report.
The capital surplus account
between Canada and Japan
— a measure of cash flowing
between the.two countries —
grew from almost zero in 1975
, to a veritable tidal flow to
Canada” by 1985.
By late 1984, Japanese
investors held almost $14
billion worth of government
bonds. By mid-1986, the fig
