Quest
for
negotiation
By Kasey Oyama
(Asian Leader)
MONTREAL. — It was a
masterful performance of an
intellectual sleight of hand
that Mr. David Crombie pulled
off with able assistance from
his chief aide Mr. Ron Doer
ing. It took a moment for the
realization to sink in but
when it did, I had to suppress
a smile — of admiration and
pleasure.
There were four in our
group, representing the Mon
treal Chapter of the National
Association of Japanese
Canadians (NAJC) — Audrey
Kobayashi, Rei Nakashima,
Kathleen Hayami, and myself.
Our purpose was to acquaint
the Minister with the views of
Japanese Canadians in Mon
treal regarding redress for
wartime injustices. We met
the Secretary of State for
Multiculturalism and his aide
in his office in the Parliament
Buildings recently.
Audrey Kobayashi made
the presentation, outlining
the position adopted by the
NAJC, which we were aware,
was well enough known to
the Minister by this time, but
it was our hope that we would
impress upon him the seri
ousness and sincerity with
which we hoped that the pro
blem would be finally resolv
ed.
Our position was stated
clearly. We wanted the gov

Dr. Suzuki renews battle
to save area descri bed
as Canada's Galapagos
BY MICHAEL KEATING
The airborne camera
sweeps over the crest of a
hill. On one side is a moon
scape of shattered branches
an d .raw^eart h I eft behind by
loggers; on the other a realm
of giant trees, rare plants and
sparkling streams filled with
salmon.
This isthe rainforest of
Windy; Bay in the Queen
Charlotte Islands off the
coast of British Columbia.
For at least TO,000 years it
has been quietly evolving into
a unique piece of the earth. It
has some of theoldest trees
on the planet: virgin stands
of hemlock, sitka spruce and
western red cedar as high as
20-story buildings.
But in recent years it has
turned into one of the major
environmental battlegrounds
in Canada.
Recently, David Suzuki,
host of the CBC program The
Nature of Things, fired
another salvo in that battle. In
his third program on the
Queen Charlottes since 1982,
Suzuki said an area that has
been described as Canada's
Galapagos Islands is on the
verge of being reduced to
ecological rubble.
He blames both British
Columbia, which is allowing
the region to be cut by timber
companies, and the federal
Government, which wants to
create a national park, forfait
ing to take strong enough ac
tion to save key areas from
the saw.
In a telling series of inter
views, Federal Environment
Minister Thomas McMillan,
who has developed a reputa
tion for caring for parks, ex
presses his concern about

DAVID SUZUKI

the future of Windy Bay. But
McMillan says he will not cut
off federal grants to the pro
vince in order to save the site.
The camera swings back
and forth between the beauty
of the wilderness and the fate
it appears to face.
The Charlottes, which par
tially escaped the last ice
age, contain many plant and
animal species unique to
Canada. They are a vital way
station for migrating birds
and a nesting place for
others.
They are also home to an
ancient civilization. They
once supported the highest
density of hunting-gathering
tribes north of mexico, but
the Haida population was
devastated by smallpox and
is only now re-asserting claim
to some of the controversial
lands.
The camera returns to
McMillan, who says that it is
up to public opinion to sway
the politicians.

surprise we discovered that
the comedian was not only a
real Japanese but was also a
comedienne.
And, she was a very funny
lady, although she appeared
mite nervous at being on na

time;
Rivers said she discovered
Tamayo Osaki at the Comedy
Store on Sunset Strip.
Her material is original and
her style is unusual because
she doesn't have that good a
command of the English
language.
Osaki said she has been in'
the U.S. for four years now
and I am wondering if she
learned English during that
period or if she spoke the
language before she set off
for America.
If her act on the Rivers'
show is any indication of her
talent, she may go a long
ways in show biz.
r ! We may be hearing a lot
more about her.
