By VIC OGURA
MONTREAL. — In our last
report, we recorded that, concious of the Democratic pro
cess, we called two general
meetings within a one month
period, and that Montreal
decisively voted1 that we
would not support the NAJC
on matters of redress.
For over two years we had
supported the National orga
nization, believing that na
tional. unity was important.
But ultimately we could not
compromise our respect and
trust.
During
the
past
few
months, your Montreal rep
resentatives have met with
Mr. David Crombie, the Minis
ter for Multiculturalism, many
times.
On January 31, 1987, Mr.
Crombie requested a one-onone discussion on matters of
redress; and over breakfast at
the Queen Elizabeth, this in
formal discussion was held
for over an hour. .
More recently (March 6,
1987) representatives from
Montreal, Hamilton and Tor
onto met with Mr. Crombie in
Toronto. Represented at that
meeting were members from
the Survivors Group,
the
Coalition of Concerned Japa
nese Canadians, and the
Toronto JCCA.
On Mr. Crombie's part, he
is seeking solutions that
would be fair to the JC com
munity, that would be morally
right, that would be realistic
relative to the Government's
debt situation.
And,
one
would suppose, he must
make a decision that would
be politically expedient. Mr.
Crombie's task is a very diffi
cult one.
But in our talks with Mr.
Crombie, there is one cons
tant concern he reiterates.
That any kind of “redress”
would be a sham if the Ja
panese Canadian community
could not unify itself. In this
context, Mr. Crombie reflects
that he is saddened by the
vindictivness of some indi
viduals and groups.
The Toronto JCCA has,
through Mr. Crombie, made
approaches to the NAJC to
attempt this process of unifi
cation. In Montreal, a Red

OTTAWA. - A long-awaited

Secretary of State David

The issue is now before
cabinet, Crombie said.
But he added that he could
not predict what the final set

will be up Jo Japanese Ca

whether to accept or reject it.
The issue provoked a
shouting
match
between
Crombie and Liberal MP Ser
gio Marchi during a session
of the House of Commons
multiculturalism committee.
Each accused the other of
paying politics with the ques
tion.
Marchi complained that
Crombie is the third Progres
sive Conservative minister
since 1984 to handle the
issue.
All three have started back
at square one by consulting
all the groups involved, Mar
chi said, adding that he is
shocked the government still
has not acted.
But, jabbing a finger in
Marchi's direction, Crombie
angrily told the MP that no
one has criticized the pro
cess until now.
“Lordy, they've suffered
enough without political par
tisanship,” he said. “You
were trying to make politics
out of it and you know it.”
Marchi admitted that the
previous Liberal government
“didn't deal expeditiously”
with the question, but neither
have the Conservatives.
During World War II, the
Canadian government reloca
ted more than 22,000 British
Columbians of
Japanese
origin, most of them Cana
dian citizens, to internment
camps. Many had their pro
perty confiscated.

In the same interview, Hon

This was determined by surveying

I am not sure about the results of
the survey because I think sound,
especially an old melody, rekindles
thoughts of the past for me.
I mean, I remember when my '
mother used to make homemade nat
to which used to stink up our house
pretty bad when she opened up the
newspaper wrappings in which the
natto was packed, but smelling natto
today doesn't necessarily make me
envision my boyhood days.
On the other hand, when I hear the
strains of Glenn Millers old standby
“Moonlight Seranade,” I can almost
feel like I am back in relocation camp
and it's the last dance. I can get a
clear picture of all the guys racing
across the floor of the messhails,
where the dances were usually held
to grab their favorite gal.
Of course, the smell of “Three
Flowers” pomade hair grease also br
ings back some recollection of camp
days because it seems like everyone
used it to give their hair the look of
that day's style . . . hair combed
flatly along side the head.
The only smell I associate with my
childhood is the smell of burning leaf
which makes me recall autumn days
of youth, when my chore was to rake
up the leaves and burn them. Usually,
at that time of the year the leaves
were moist and it did emit a certain
smell.
I suppose when one gets older all
the senses become a little duller
which may account for resistance of
one's memory to recall the past by
smell or sound.
Most people say that the entire
country of Japan has a certain smell
to it.
And this is true.
Whenever I get off the plane at the
airport in Japan and take a whiff of
the air, I know that I am in Japan.
It is hard to describe but it is a
smell distinctive to Japan. Perhaps
it's the humidity in the air but it is
the only country I have been to that
has its own distinctive smell.
So, when someone says, “it smells
like Japan,” I know to what he is
referring.
I wonder if a Japanese coming to
the United States feels the same way
about our country.
Do we have a smell which is
distinctive only to the U.S.?
