Port Dover sending 12
maple trees to Japan
PORT DOVER, Ont. — Kobi
Kobayashi of Port Dover and
Jim McIntyre have joined
forces in an international pro
ject of goodwill.
These two men, working on
behalf of Port Dover Lions
Club are making arrange
ments to send 12 Canadian
maple trees to Japan.
Hikaru Oka, Consul Gen
eral of Japan, was told of the
proposal in his Toronto of
fice. He was delighted. Work
began immediately with top
Japanese officials.
Consul General Oka wrote
to the two Port Dover men
recently saying, “as for your
kind offer of 12 Canadian
maple trees for the people of
Shiga-ken, I have already be
gun looking into the matter.
The necessary communica
tions may take some time.
For now, I have appointed
one of my staff, Vice-Consul
Kinzo Nakagun, to contact
the Japanese side and keep
you informed of all develop
ments.
“I appreciate much your
taking the initiative on this
friendship project. I qertainly
hope that it will be realized
successfully.”

Since then the Japanese
Government has sent cherry
trees here on two other occa

appreciation of the clothing
when it was so badly needed
at a time when that country
had few friends in the world.
Now, to indicate Port

planted somewhere in Shigaken.

against Japan is rejected,
they will consider asking the

seek priority treatment.
Mr. Forbes pointed out that
their claims bears some re
semblance to that of Japan
ese Canadians, and he has
agreed to provide information
to the NAJC about their
claim.
NAJC president, Art Miki,
described the meeting as
very informative, and said he
was pleased that the Hong

ing an adverse position. Be
cause it was his understand

Another article suggests
that the scope of genocide of
the Jews during WW2 was ex
aggerated. (One wonders: if
so, by how much? Instead of
6,000,000, was it, say,
5,460,000?)
In passing, the Times arti
cle notes that Mr. Uno is a
Christian fundamentalist who
heads an organization called
the Middle East Problems Re
search Center. Oh, by the
way, he also disavows any in
tended anti-Semitism. (Yes, I
too wondered about Mr.
Uno's orientation, noting the
“Middle East” portion of the
label of his organization.) In
the U.S., we're not unfamiliar
with religious “fundamen
talists” whose pronounce
ments one would be well ad
vised to look askance.
It isn't that the Japanese,
in years past, have not been
understanding and actively
sympathetic to the historic
plight of Jews in the world.

Now it's trout racing in Japan
TOKYO — Gamblers can
bet on horse races, bicycle
races, dog races and even
duck races, but soon they'll
be able to put their money on
“yamame” trout in the hot
spring town of Shimobe in
Yamanashi Prefecture.
The fiscal 1987 budget draft
submitted to the Shimobe
Town Assembly recently in
cludes three million yen of
constructing large plastic
racing tanks for the trout on
the dry riverbed of the Shi
mobe River.
The trout racing tanks are
scheduled to open in autumn
when the “yamame” festival
is held.
A bridge will be built over
an artificial lake with a cir
cumference of 100 meters
and eight transparent plastic
tanks will be lined up on the
bridge. Each tank will be 10
meters long, 30 centimeters
wide and 15 centimeters

deep.
When the electric-powered
starting gates are opened,
eight trouts raised in breed
ing ponds will start swim
ming and an electric panel
will record times.
Visitors will pay 200 to 300
yen as “feed charge” to bet
on the trouts, and those pick
ing the winners will be given
a smoked “yamame” as pre
sents instead of the usual
cash payoffs for other forms
of gambling.
Shimobe Mayor Saisho Ko
bayashi says “yamame” can
swim upriver in fast currents,
covering 10 meters in about
10 seconds.
If the plan is successful,
the city may develop trout
racing into a ^regular parimutual gambling sport with
cash payoffs.

The mayor said he got the
idea for trout racing when he
went to Hokkaido three years
ago and saw a duck race.
