NAJC reps attend Canadian
Ethno-cultural Council meet
By TATSUO KAGE
TORONTO. — On April 11
and 12, 1987 a meeting of
the Canadian Ethno-cultural
Council was held in Toronto
in order to discuss the future
level of immigration and for
mulate recommendations to
the federal government.
CEC is an umbrella organi
zation consisting of 35 na
tional ethnic organizations
(the National Association of
Japanese Canadians is a
member) and it was asked
by Immigration Canada to
present its views about im
migration levels in the com
ing three years. Even though
this was the first occasion
for the CEC to be asked to
present its views, it is in
the Immigration Act that the
minister could consult with
non - government organiza
tions before he presents the
proposed future level of im
migrant intake to the Parlia
ment which usually takes
place at the end of October
every year.
There were over 100 parti
cipants, i.e., representatives
of each member organizations, interested individuals
and a dozen immigration offi
cials as resource people, Mr.
Gerry Weiner, the minister of
state for immigration, was
also present to give a speech.
Discussion was intense and
lively. The delegates voted to
recommend that immigration
levels increase to 250,000 a
year by 1990. As annual im
migration during recent years
has been less than 100,000,
i.e. Canada should almost
triple its yearly intake. This
is much more than yearly in
take of 150,000 to 175,000,

which Mr. Weiner wishes to
see.
There was a strong consen
sus among the delegates that
immigration in general would
be good for the country. More
young people are needed in
order to prevent decline in
population in the 21st cen
tury; regulations on family
reunification should be revis
ed so that adult children,
brothers and sisters could
easily immigrate; more refu
gees should be accepted
through stream-lined proce
dures; and more skilled
workers and entrepreneurs
are needed for the economy.
Both delegates and govern
ment officials were aware

Economic Travel
to Japan by JNTO
TORONTO. — A strong
Japanese yen and a weak
Canadian dollar would seem
to make travel to Japan prohi
bitively expensive. Not nece
ssarily, insists the Japanese
National Tourist Organization.
One has to be careful, but it is
possible.
To help budget-minded tra
vellers keep to that budget,
the JNTO has published a
booklet entitled Economical
Travel to Japan that advises
holidaymakers of the least
expensive way to enjoy every
thing from factory inspection
tours to Sumo wrestling.^
It also covers tips about
travel within Japan, including
underground travel in Tokyo
and Osaka.

booklet, write the JNTO at

that there have been strong
sentiments among the Cana
dian public against immi
grants and immigration. No
body at the meeting took the
notion that “immigrants take
away jobs” seriously. How
ever, serious efforts are ne
cessary to educate the public
about both short and long
term benefits of immigration,
especially in view of the fact
that Canada yearly loses at
least 50,000 people by im
migration. Who is respon
sible for the public education
in this regard? A representa
tive of the Immigration De
partment mentioned that vol-

Buy Your Ontario Resident
Sport Fishing Licence Today
As of January 1st, 1987, Ontario anglers aged 18 to 64 are required to purchase a
$10 annual licence or a $5 four-day licence. The cost isn’t much considering what the
money will do.
Ontario anglers are lucky to have a province abounding with a wide variety of sport fish.
But it takes more than luck. It takes things like stocking programs, habitat improvement,
volunteer projects and fisheries research.
The new Ontario Resident Sport Fishing Licence can be obtained from your local
licence issuer or from Ministry of Natural Resources District offices.

Toyota to up

TORONTO. — Toyota Motor Corp.'s wholly owned Ca
nadian subsidiary is to start
building a new 3,900-sq.
meter plant this December at
Delta City in British Colum
bia. It also plans to increase
its work force by 65 persons
to 135, Toyota officials said.
The project is part of Ca
nadian Autoparts Toyota's
plans to double its monthly
output of aluminum hubcaps
to 40,000 from August 1989.
Capital spending for the new
plant will total $26 million,
including $6 million in sub
sidies from the federal and
provincial governments, the
officials said.
Canadian Autoparts Toyota
has so far exported its entire
output to Japan, but it plans
to supply its extra production
to Toyota's new wholly own
ed U.S. and Canadian auto
subsidiaries, which will start
production in 1988.
