TOKYO. — Swallows are
not only returning to the fam
ed California mission in San
Juan Capistrano, they are
coming back to Tokyo, accor
ding to area bird-watchers.
Once driven out of Japan' s
metroplitan area by post war
urbanization, a report by a
study group said the number
of swallows migrating to
Japan's urban area has been
on the increase.
Known throughout the
world for their graceful flight
and regular migrations, swal
lows typically fly to Japan in
late March and early April and
stay until the middle of Oc
tober. They then migrate to
Southeast Asia and the
Philippines. Their young
hatch between May and July.
About five years ago,
swallows were seldom seen
in central Tokyo. Now the
birds are returning in greater
numbers, making nests under
the eaves of street-level
shops and high-rise apart
ments office buildings.
One group of bird watchers
has counted 30 nests within
1.8 miles of Tokyo Station —
an area that includes the
busy streets of the Ginza and
Kanda districts. “One reason
for their making nests in ur
ban areas is that they can
avoid their natural enemies,
such as crows,” says Kochi
Karasawa, a high-school •

adds, however, that the birds
will now be more vulnerable
to the vagaries of another
