in Japan open 1988
TOKYO.
The world's
longest road-railway bridge,
Seto Ohashi Bridge will be
opened in the spring of 1988
to connect the cities of Okayama and Sakaide crossing
over the Seto Inland Sea. For
international tourists who
have enjoyed boat and hydrofoil-trips across the sea between the mainland of Honshu and the island of Shi
koku, there will be another
alternative to cross this
beautiful scenery by this
newly created bridge which
will cut 52 minutes off the
1 hour time presently needed
to cross the strait by ferry
boat.
The Seto Ohashi Bridge
consists of six bridges link
ing five small islands running
across a 9.4 kilometre strait;
3 suspension bridges, 2 cable
stayed bridges, 1 truss bridge,
5 viaducts, total of 11. bridges
and total length of bridges is
12.3 kilometres.

to be introduced
TOKYO. — Torlo Electronics Co., based in Gifu, said it
will soon market the world's
first “talking card” equipped
with a built-in tapeless voice
recording and reporting de
vice under the brand name
Talking Christmas Card. The
ultra-thin card is as small as
an ordinary credit card mea
suring 2.1x3.4x0.19 inches
and weighing only 40 grams.
The company said the card
uses a computer chip to
record and reproduce voice
messages, making it ideal for
sending Christmas greeting.
The card will be introduced In
Japan in August price at
6,500 yen ($43). No price has
been set as yet for the over
seas market.

The Abstract-Index is the
only comprehensive record of
Japanese American activities
throughout the United States
and Canada. This publication
provides basic contemporary
history of Japanese in Amer
ica. “Newspaper is a first
draft of history.”
It contains abstracts of
news articles from the Eng
lish sections of all 15 Japa
nese American vernacular
newspapers and 4 Asian
American newspapers with a
section on Japanese Ameri
cans. These newspapers in
cluded The New Canadian
(Toronto), Chicago Shlmpo
(Chicago),
Hawaii

(Honolulu), Hawaii Hochi
(Honolulu), Hokubei Mainlchi

grouping, entries are listed in

gical overview of Japanese
American news. The publica
tion format is similar to New
York Times Index.
In addition to the regular
news items, the abstracts in
clude local Japanese Ameri
can community news. Sports
abstracts cover only regional
championship games and Ja
panese American profes
sional athletes. The obituary
section Identifies the deceas
ed by name, age, date of

This publication is already

nual Convention of the East
ern Buddhist League (EBL)
will gather at Holiday Inn,
Yorkdale, Toronto with the
theme “Nembutsu-The Call
of Amida Buddha”.
Some 350 to 400 Buddhists
from Hamilton, Montreal, De
troit, New York, Cleveland,
Seabrook, Washington, Chi
cago, Minneapolis-St. Paul,
and of course from the host
city, Toronto, are expected to
meet at the hotel and also at
the Bathurst Street Temple,
to participate in a number
of seminars and workshops
covering a wide range of
topics.
This is the third time Tor
onto Buddhist Church will be
hosting the EBL Convention,
the previous occasions were
In 1982 and in 1976, accord
ing to Convention Co-ordina
tor, Harry Yonekura.
