(New York Nlchlbel)

TORONTO. — Among the
more than 2,000 people from
Ontario who will carry the
1988 Winter Olympic torch
after It is carried into Ottawa
from Hull, Quebec will be
three Nikkei runners. They
are: Gary A. Ito (Day 33 Dec.
19 Millhaven-Colborne); An
drew S. Arai (Day 40, Dec. 26
Stoney Creek-Fort Erie), and
Jeremy M. Funamoto (Day 48,
Jan. 3 Reeces Corners-London).
They will be among the
6,520 national torchbearers in
a three month cross-country
marathon that drew a record
6.6 million applications from
Canadians.
The relay begins Nov. 17 at
Signal Hill on the east coast
of Newfoundland and will
pass through all 10 provinces
and both territories to the
opening Feb. 13 of the Cal
gary Winter Games.
In Calgary, the torch will be
used to light the flame at
McMahon Stadium, officially
opening the Games.
The torch will be carried in
to Ontario at Ottawa from
Hull, Que., next Dec. 16 —
Day 30 of the national trek —
and travel 4,499 kilometres
(2,795 miles) in the province

before crossing into Mani
toba on Jan. 14.
About 2.5 million applica
tions were sent in from On
tario, says Sandy Hunter of
Petro Canada, sponsor of the
$5.5 million relay.

Sumo
By Leighton A. Wlllgeroot
TOKYO. — The first Sumo
tournament of the year was
underway recently. It will last
for 15 days and be repeated 6
times during the year.
It has always surprised me
how popular sumo is with the
foreign community in Japan.
One theory is that for Ameri
cans, at least, it becomes a
substitute for football or
other sport avidly followed in
the United States but more
difficult to keep up with while
in Japan. The unusual size
and bulk of the wrestlers is
also an aspect of the sport
which seems to intrigue
foreign viewers. In any case
I woundn' t be at all surprised
that if a survey was taken, a
random selection of resident
foreigners would demonstrate
more detailed knowledge of
the current sumo scene than
an equal number of randomly
selected Japanese.
The questions most com
monly asked be newcomers
to sumo are how do they get
so big and where do they
come from.
Upper ranked
wrestlers typically weigh
around 150 kilos (330 lbs.)
but Konishiki, a Hawaiian of
Samoan descent and the only
non-Japanese in the top ranks,
tips the scales at 232 kilos
(510 lbs.). Onokuni is next at
202 kilos (440 lbs.).
The most common route
into the sumo world is for 14
to 16 year old boys to be to be
scouted in their home towns
or villages and asked to join
a training stable. At that age a
large frame and heavy bone
structure is the prime phy
sical prerequisite. The weight
can come later. There is no
special region in Japan which
breeds sumo wrestlers but
they usually come from lower
middle class families.
Life in the sumo stable is
hard. It is organized accor
ding to a strict almost feudalistic hierarchy; the regimen
is spartan and the training
very tough. It is possible for
anyone to visit a stable by
merely wandering in to watch
the training, but with an in
troduction and appropriate
monetary contribution one
can arrange to take the mid
day meal with the wrestlers.
I have visited several over the
past few years.
For the junior wrestler the
day begins around 3:30 am
when they are expected to
get up to begin the daily
workout. The more senior
wrestlers are allowed to
sleep in until about 6:001
Practice consists of taking
turns battling each other or
a wooden post, interspers
ed with assorted exercises.
Since along with weight,
strength, and a low center of
gravity, the suppleness of a
ballet dancer is also essential
to good sumo, stretching ex
ercises are emphasized. Any

his salt can sit flat on the
floor with both legs stretched
in opposite directions form
ing a perfectly straight line
and touch his head to the
ground. During the session it
is not unusual for several of
the older wrestlers to select
one of the juniors and taking
turns repeatedly throw him to
the floor until he is so ex
hausted they have to pick him
up in order to throw him down
again. This is supposed to
develop toughness and spirit.
The first meal of the day is
not served until around 11:00
and by that time they are
ravenous. It is always the
same, chankonabe, a stew
containing large chunks of
fish, chicken, tofu, and
assorted veretables served
with many bowls of rice and
washed down with beer.
Huge quantities are consum
ed after which they sleep.
Some callisthenics or weight
lifting later in the afternoon is
optional, followed by another
heavy meal in the early evenin9Two huge meals a day,
preceded by exercise and ’
followed by sleep, seems to
be the key to put 70 or more
kgs on a growing boy. After
retirement, however, it is .
highly recommended that the
process be reversed. It would
logically follow that no exer
cise, little sleep, and several
light meals per day would do
the trick but I suspect the key
to shedding so much excess
flesh is not that simple.
