Richmond school teacher
wins famed bathtub race

Saving
Face

VANCOUVER. — The top
captain of British Columbia's
bathtubs is Wayne Nakatani
of Richmond. He was the win
ner recently of the 21st Na
naimo to Vancouver bathtub
race.
Tossed like a cork on the
choppy waters,
“Captain”
Nakatani took two hours, 27
minutes and 58 seconds to be
the first to ring the winner's
bell on Kitsilano Beach.
After a wobbly-legged

By BILL MARUTANI
To be reprimanded by
one's Issei parent that be. cause of your action “Sekensama ni kao o dasenai”
(“Can't show your face in
public”) was a jolting deter
rent, one that no Nisei would
wish to have to confront.
Bringing
shame upon
the family,
or the com
munity (nihojin com
munity), is a
form of disgrace that undoubtedly
restrained many a Nisei from
engaging in rambunctious
behavior. Also, however, the
concept propelled many to
achieve — some would say
over-achieve — whether it be
in judo, baseball, or school.
Especially school.
While it may be that, on
balance, this restraintpropellant generally stood us
in good stead, it did cause
some decided deficits in our
development. And still has,
albeit not as acutely.
Thus, generally, Nisei tend
to hold back and not speak up
in public even when one
should (unless it be an all
Nisei gathering — and then
almost without restraint);
and, as we've had occasion
to mention before, this is one
of the reasons so few Nisei
dare to run for public office
— because someone has to
lose. And losing was equated
with haji (shame).
One had to achieve. Save
face.
I looked up the word kao in
the jiten. It's revealing how
“face” is used in various
ways in the Japanese
language. It epitomizes the
person in many ways. Thus,
for example, kao o dasu (ex
pose the face) means to ap
pear in a private setting. On
the other hand, to appear in
public is kao o miteru. In
other words, to guests in
one's own home, it is dasu;
in public it is miseru.
To be charcterized as kao
ga hiroi (wide or broad) is to
be widely known; kao ga
ureru (saleable) — you 've got
it — is to be popular; kao o
tateru (stand, build) is to
uphold one's face or honor;
kao o tsubusu (crush or de
molish) is, of course, to lose
it; kao o awaseru (join or
meet) is to have — as we

“I just wanted to make it

was his second bathtub race.
He didn't survive the starting
gun at a previous race in Port
Moody.
He said his coast guard ex

the rough water for his win.
Nakatani's winning time was
the third slowest in the
race's history.

you may also hear expres

which means to advertise

denote the repugnant con

Along this same line, do
not adopt the jargon kao o

means “Let's have a talk”
(perhaps somewhat akin to
“Lend me your ear,” although
not quite as elegant as the
meaning from Julius Caesar).

TORONTO. — On July 20,
1887, Tadayoshi Sakamoto
was born in Yamanashi-ken,
on the northern site of Mount
Fuji in Japan. One century
later, he celebrated his 100th
birthday in Canada, surround
ed by family and friends.
On July 19, the children,
grandchildren
and
great
grandchildren of Tadayoshi
and Machiye Sakamoto, as
well as long-standing friends
from Vancouver, New Denver
and Toronto, gathered to
mark the event with sushi and
birthday cake at Nami Res
taurant.
After setting off from Ya
manashi-ken in 1907, Tadayo
shi Sakamoto first arrived in
Hawaii where he worked in
the pineapple fields. Before
long he left for the northern
climes of Canada and joined
the Canadian Pacific Railway.
As a porter, he travelled
cross-country from Montreal
to Vancouver.
In 1909, he settled in
Ocean Falls, B.C. to work as a
painter at the local pulp and
paper mills. Eventually, he
made the decision to remain
in Canada, and became a
naturalized Canadian citizen

in 1915. He returned briefly to
Japan where his marriage to
Machiye Okuyama was ar
ranged in 1918.

Tadayoshi first brought his
new bride back to Ocean
Falls where eventually, two
children — Tadao and Yoshio
— were born. In 1920, they
moved to Vancouver where
Tadayoshi would own and
operate a rooming house at
Cordova and Jackson Streets
in the Powell Streeet district
for the next 22 years. Four
more children would arrive
during this time — Hideo,
Emiko, Shizuye and Tatsuo.

At the end of the war, Tada
yoshi was given the ultima
tum of moving his family east
or returning to Japan, a coun
try he has not seen since
1918. The family decided to
remain in Canada and settled
in Toronto, where they have
lived ever since.

his friend. Thanks to the in
fluence of Yoshida, he was
able to meet yakuza leaders
one after another. Soejima
has interviewed and photo
graphed 22 leaders so far.
“Most of them are from
poor families, having receiv
ed little education right after
World War II, but learned
how not to be the underdog
through racketeering and
other means. They are now
living in large houses which
even many presidents of
major companies cannot af
ford,” he observes.
His first photo exhibition
of “Gokudo” subtitled
“Patriarchs of Another Fami
ly” in January last year in
Tokyo was so well-received
that it was shown in three
other cities in the following
months. The series of Soeji
ma's yakuza interviews writ
ten for a men's magazine
has recently been compiled
into two paperbacks with the
same title as the exhibition.
Soejima said he was lucky
to have been treated as a
guest by each yakuza leader.
He in turn has accepted their
code of conduct and morals.
A very strict relationship ex
ists in a “patriarchal family”
whose members are loyal to
the head of the family — they
are even willing to sacrifice
their lives for the benefit of
their leader.
