Japanese interests still
piqued by Yakuza life
By KAZUKO FUJIMOTO
TOKYO. — Like it or not,
the yakuza or gokudo (gangs
ter, rogue) has long been a
part of Japanese society — at
times being glorified in the
Toei yakuza films, other
times making headlines with
its operations here and
abroad, its internal strifes
and wars waged between
rival groups.
Recently, the publication
of a number of books on the
yakuza has aroused public in
terest in the world of the
“gokudo.”
The forerunner of the trend
was a non-fiction serial —
“Gokudo no Onnatachi
(Gangsters' Wives)” — that
appeared in the weekly Bunshun magazine in late 1985.
The serial, which closely por
trays the lives of women who
married oyabun (gang bosses),
became a best seller after be
ing published in book form by
Bungeishunju last August.
The writer was Shoko Ieda, a
young female freelance jour
nalist, who toiled to get ac
quainted with, arid eventually
interview the women.
According to an editorial
staff member of Bunshun,
Ieda had approached them
with her idea just when they
were reporting extensively on
the on-going war waged bet
ween
Yamaguchi-gumi,
Japan's largest yakuza
group, and Ichiwa-kai, a rival
offshoot. “In the course of
covering the war, we too had
become interested in family
lives of the yakuza,” he says,
adding that the book's
popularity may reflect the
public's urge to learn about
an “unknown world” and,
moreover, the obsure figures
— wives of the yakuza — in
that world.
Movie Version
A cinematized version of
the book was released by
Toei last November and
grossed Y800 million — an
impressive figure for an
adult-oriented movie, accor
ding to a publicity staff
member of the company.
“Gokudo no Onnatachi Part
II,” directed by Toru Dobashi,
starring Yukiyo Toake and
Rino Katase, will be released
this autumn.
“I think the Japanese are
generally drawn to the world
of the gokudo with its jingi
(code of morals among the
yakuza) and giri (duty),” says
the Toei staff member.
Books written by a gokudoturned-author, Joji Abe, 50,
have also become best
sellers. His first book was
“Hei no Naka no Korinai
Menmen” (Bungeishunju,
1986) whose title translates
to “those within the walls
who don't learn their
lessons,” in short, those serv
ing sentences in the prison.
Abe, born to an “ordinary”

family, was a bright child who
made it into the elite Azabu
Junior High School. How
ever, he -joined the Tokyo
based yakuza group, Andogumi, at 16 and spent 28
years as a gokudo of which
eight were spent with the
“walls.” When he was releas
ed from prison in 1979 Abe
decided to quit being a
yakuza and become matto
(straight) for good.
Hard Life
Abe's life as an ex-yakuza
and convict was a hard one
until “Hei no Naka,” based on
his serial for a magazine compiled by essayist Natsuhiko
Yamamoto, was published
last year.
Abe, now a lion of the day,
has written five best-sellers
so far in which he has
depicted the gokudo world —
its people, codes, hierarchy,
business — effectively, and
with humor.
Critics have commented
that Abe has established a
genre of “gokudo entertain
ment” by writing about the
yakuza, glorifying them when
necessary to meet the tastes
of the public. A movie basedon “Hei no Naka” is schedul
ed to be released soon.

without paying.
Sorry, but you won’t be filing those slips of paper in your glove

Because new legislation means that either you pay the fine, request a
trial if you wish to dispute the alleged infraction or your vehicle permit and
license sticker will not be renewed.
You decide which option. It’s that simple.
If you receive a parking infraction notice, you will
know if the municipality issuing the ticket is
enforcing the new legislation. Your options will
be clearly stated on the ticket. All municipalities
will be enforcing the new legislation by
