In an attempt to promote
cultural exhange between
Japan and the Netherlands,
Dr. Sanshin Hara, 63, a direc
tor of a hospital in Fukuoka,
has established a foundation
to promote his endeavor.
According to Hara, one or
his ancestors, who was a
member of the sixth gereration of his family and who
died in 1711„studied Western
surgery techniques from a
Dutch doctor on Degima,
Nagasaki, under order of the
feudal lord of the Kuroda clan
in Fukuoka. He then received
a certificate for surgery on
Oct. 18, 1685.
At that time, the Tokugawa
Shogunate was continuing
national seclusion policies.
The policies were first ad
opted in 1630 and continued
through 1854.
During the period, Dutch,
Chinese and Koreans were
permitted access to Japan,
but they were confined on De
jima, the shogunate-controll
ed port island situated off the
coast of Nagasaki.

and equipment valued at $2.7
million U.S., for a cash out
lay of $375,000. The IRS con
