House of Representatives of
fered the nation's apology
and $1.2 billion in reparations
to thousands of Japanese
Americans who were forced
into relocation camps during
World War II on Sept. 17th.
The 243-141 vote on the
Civil Liberties Act came after
more than four hours of often
emotional debate.
“Perhaps the most egre

was the imprisonment of
some 120,000 Americans in
World War II . . . simply on
the grounds of their ances

Wright.
“Today we finally have an
opportunity to redress that
ancient wrong.”
The vote capped a threeyear effort by California Con

They'll rub, in baby oil,

They pump themselves up
with weights, then walk
onstage to puff their stuff to a
panel of judges.
According to one woman
body builder, the bulk of the
judging occurs before the
public event, and the winner
is usually known by the con
testants in advance. The com
pulsory poses include flexing
the front double biceps, back
double biceps, side triceps,
the abdominals, and the side
chest.
While their training can
definitely increase the size of
the chest (the pectoral),
women body builders'
breasts usually shrink,
especially
during
the
strenuous preparations for
competition.
“Because it's mostly body
fat, explains Cathy Chang, 35,
who's been lifting weights
for 17 years. Chang was born
in Hilo but moved to Oahu in
the third grade. “After you get
off your diet and eat normally,
and you get your carbohy
drates and protein back, you
fill out again.
“A lot of women are now
taking steroids,” she con
tinues, “which also decreases
the size of the breasts. So
more women are getting breast
implants.”
None of the women inter
viewed for this article says
she uses steroids. (None was
asked about implants.) But
women aren't the only body
builders getting help from
silicon. Some male body
builders are having calf im
plants done, Chang pointed
out, as well as nose jobs to
improve appearance from
head to toe.
“I wish there was a way we
could test for steroids and
get them out of the sport,”
says Lori Okami, the currant
NPC champion. “We are pro
jecting an image of health,
yet steroids are not healthy.
Not only not healthy, but il
legal. I think it's sad we
can't compete naturally and
win on our own merits.”
For body builders like
Okami, the rewards of turning
professional can be lucrative.
For a two-minute “guest
pose” at a show, a national
champion receives a fee
ranging from $1,000-$10,000
plus all travel expenses. And
for Lori Okami, just being on
stage adds to the payoff.
“I eat it up, the lights,
everything,’’she says. “When
I walk out, 20 or 30 people will
yell out my number or the col
or of my suit. I get regular
calls from people on the
Mainland who don't know,
but who have seen my pictures
in magazines. I get letters.”
The negative comments
about her appearance stop
ped years ago.
“My femininity is impor
tant to me, and I try to project
that,” she says thoughtfully.
“It's not just a big body of
muscle. It's not just lifting
weights, you can reshape
your body. That's what
makes it interesting, what
makes it an art.”

in Hilo but moved to Oahu in
the third grade. “After you get
off your diet and eat normally,
and you get your carbohy
drates and protein back, you
fill out again.
“A lot of women are now
taking steroids,” she con
tinues, “which also decreases
the size of the breasts. So
more women are getting breast
implants.”
None of the women inter
viewed for this article says
she uses steroids. (None was
asked about implants.) But
women aren't the only body
builders getting help from
silicon. Some male body
builders are having calf im
plants done, Chang pointed
out, as well as nose jobs to
improve appearance from
head to toe.
“I wish there was a way we
could test for steroids and
get them out of the sport,”
says Lori Okami, the currant
NPC champion. “We are pro
jecting an image of health,
yet steroids are not healthy.
Not only not healthy, but il
legal. I think it's sad we
can't compete naturally and
win on our own merits.”
For body builders like
Okami, the rewards of turning
professional can be lucrative.
For a two-minute “guest
pose” at a show, a national
champion receives a fee
ranging from $1,000-$10,000
plus all travel expenses. And
for Lori Okami, just being on
stage adds to the payoff.
“I eat it up, the lights,
everything,’’she says. “When
I walk out, 20 or 30 people will
yell out my number or the col
or of my suit. I get regular
calls from people on the
Mainland who don't know,
but who have seen my pictures
in magazines. I get letters.”
The negative comments
about her appearance stop
ped years ago.
“My femininity is impor
tant to me, and I try to project
that,” she says thoughtfully.
“It's not just a big body of
muscle. It's not just lifting
weights, you can reshape
your body. That's what
makes it interesting, what
makes it an art.”
