Jpnz. hemlines
and legs
By George Yoshinaga
As one who enjoys girl watching
as a way to pass the time of day, I
was under the impression that the
hem line on the skirts of women were
coming down to almost ankle height.
At least in America, it seems that
this is the trend.
However, according to the accom
panying photo, the hem line on skirts
in Japan seems to be going in the op
posite direction.
As one Tokyo newspaper wrote,
“To the delight • of shapely-leg
adorers, mini-skirts are back in
fashion in the Ginza, Shinjuku and
other busy areas of Tokyo and other
major cities in Japan where fashion
conscious young women flock to.”
-Actually, of what I've seen of Ja
panese women's legs, I would think
that the dropping of the hem line to
ankle length would be welcomed.
Let's face it, the legs which hold
up Japanese women are not exactly
what an average American girl wat
cher would enjoy looking at.
In the old days, they used to refer
to Japanese women 's legs as daikon
ashi, and I don't have to tell you
what a daikon looks like, do I?
In Japan, they even go a step fur
ther by referring to some legs as
Sakurajima-daikon ashi, which is
supposed to be a special variety of
daikon which grows on Sakura Island
is especially known for its size and
shape.
I suppose in more recent times,
the legs on Japanese women have
shown a marked improvement.
Could it be the diet?
Some people say that Japanese
women developed bad legs because
they had to sit on the tatami floors
with their legs bent under their
bodies.
Doing this from a young age didn' t
enhance their chance to develop the
kind of legs which would look good
in a mini-skirt.
Nowadays, everyone sits in chairs
so the legs do get a chance to form
properly but I don't know if this is
the reason why more Japanese
women have legs that look more at
tractive.
Anyhooo ... as I said, as a girl wat
cher (generally referred to as a dirty
old man when you reach my age) I am
a leg watcher but when I lived in
Japan, I really didn't have too much
to look at.

Okanagan Reunion is success
By KEN IRIZAWA
TORONTO. — Over 90 people with various ties to the Oka
nagan Valley enjoyed a highly successful reunion at the Man
darin Palace Restaurant in Toronto recently. Nostalgia filled
the air as one story would evoke several memories. And de
spite the older nisei designation for most of those present, it
was amazing how vibrant and prosperous all appeared to be.
M.C. Tak Irizawa kept things moving right along with wel
coming remarks from Ets Irizawa, grace offered by PastorStan
Yokota and a toast to the Okanagan proposed by Ritz Kino
shita.
Following the notable ten-course gourmet banquet ac
companied by Okanagan wine, Osam Kobayashi presented
a humorous “Look at ourselves —then and now”. George
Masuda led the entertainment portion of the programme ably
abetted by Shirley Takagi, George Nishidera and Roy and
Mitsy (Bear Creek) Ito.
As a further memento of the evening, a souvenir booklet
complete with photographs and remembrances will be pro
duced by Osam Kobayashi.
The organizing committee wishes to acknowledge the
generous contributions by Nami Restaurant, Mandarin Palace
Restaurant, Japan Air Lines, Nippon Video Centre, Sanko
Trading Co., and Ritz Kinoshita General Insurance towards
the success of the Reunion. Also, a big thanks to Faith Kino
