JCCC 25th Anniv. booklet
TORONTO. — In October,
1988, the Japanese Cana
dian Cultural Centre will
reach an important milestone
— its 25th anniversary. A
series of festive events and
functions are planned com
mencing with Issei Day on
October 18, 1987. Issei Day
was the first major function
held at the Centre 25 years
ago.
To launch the celebration,
the JCCC will print a souvenir
booklet. It will be ready for
distribution, free of charge, to
all members, supporters and
advertisers.

2,271 Jpnz. are
over 100 years

This booklet will list the
complete programme of the
celebration year (October
1987 — October 1988). It will
present an Outline history of
its quarter-century existence.
There will be a report from all
the clubs, classes and groups
under the JCCC umbrella,
together with photos. Finally,
it will promote and publicize
the JCCC not only as a vital
factor with the Japanese Ca
nadian community but also
as a significant cultural and
educational
institution of
Metropolitan Toronto.
In order to generate funds
to underwrite the celebration
as well as to defray the cost
of, this anniversary booklet,
we are requesting that our
members
and
supporters
consider inserting a personal
greeting, professional or busi
ness message/advertisement
in this booklet. This, of
course, will not be the only
source of revenue, however,
we are preparing and hoping
for a memorable year and
every contribution will make
that possible.

Rage: An
emotional
experience
By AKI HAWATA
On a recent (July) business
trip to Ottawa, New York and
Washington, I had a most
memorable and enjoyable ex
perience. On my second
evening in Ottawa, I decided
to go for a short stroll after
dinner. I wandered over to the
National Arts Centre which
was just across the Rideau
Canal from my hotel, and in
browsing around the Centre,
I found that a Summer Festi
val called Dance Canada was
on.
Inside the foyer, I noticed a
line-up for tickets to the even
ing performance, so I pur
chased a ticket without even
knowing what was scheduled
for that evening. When I sat
down and looked at the pro
gram, I was pleasantly sur
prised to find that the first
performance was “Rage” by
Kokoro Dance, conceived
and directed by Jay Hirabayashi (Gordon Hirabayashi's
son).

“Ugly Japanese” exposed
in Hong Kong shopping tours
'HONG KONG. — Taking
advantage of the high yen,
Japanese women are coming
to Hong Kong in large num
bers in search of brand-name
products, which are often
available at prices lower than
in Europe.
While Hong Kong tourist
officials welcome the trend,
local Japanese travel agen
cies are becoming highly
concerned about the in
cautious conduct of all the
Japanese tourists who
behave as if they were on a
domestic tour of their home
land.
In one of the numerous
episodes telling of their at
titude, an old woman, partici
pating in a package tour, ask
ed a Hong Kong guide who
spoke Japanese, “Isn't there
a TV station here which runs
programs in Japanese?”
When a Japanese tour con
ductor suggested late at
night to a young woman who
could not use her hair dryer,
that she ask the hotel desk
for help, she said, “I can't
speak English. Isn't a travel
agent supposed to help in a
situation like this?”
In still another case, a
travel agent had to persuade
a jewelry shop to make a re
fund for a Japanese woman
who claimed she had lost a
jade when it dropped off its
ring in a Japanese supermar
ket.
The careless attitude of
Japanese tourists is reflected
in the fact that more of them
are losing their passports.
According to the Japanese
Consulate General, 141 pass
ports were lost here and in
Taiwan during the first half of
this year, almost twice the
figure for the same period in
1986.
The main reason may be

Hawata ...

that the Japanese feel that
they can do almost anything
they want and have someone
come to their rescue because
they feel their money can buy
any service.
Since many Japanese
come here for shopping, a
shop specializing in brand-,
name products in a hotel in
the south of Kowloon Penin
sula has had to put up a sign
in Japanese, saying, “Please
stand in a line,” at the door.
Statistics show that there
were more than 463,000
Japanese visitors during the
first six months of this year,
up 44 percent over a year ago.
The number is expected to
exceed one milliion by the
end of the year.
The six-month spending of
nearly $63 billion
by
Japanese tourists represents
a two-fold increase.
