Toshiba develops a first
in 3-dimensional video
TOKYO — Toshiba Corp, said it has developed the world's
first handy video camera-recorder for shooting and repro
ducing three-dimension pictures for both home and industrial
use. The company said the device, which incorporates two
eye-like microcamera heads, shoots two pictures simultane
ously and viewers can see three-dimensional images through
special liquid crystal glasses.

By BILL HOSOKAWA
It was several years after
the war, ended that I received
a letter fron an old Nisei
friend in Japan. Actually, she
wasn't my friend although I
knew her. Her parents and my
parents were friends and I
had known her only casually
because she was somewhat

The company said its engineers have succeeded in sim
plifying a complex process to produce three-dimensional im
ages. In the past, complex steps were required to synchro
nize two video cameras with two recorders to produce clear
images.

Digital image processing technology was applied to elimi
nate the flickering which plagued the image reproduction,
according to the company's spokesman.
Toshiba said the device weighs 3.67 pounds, including
a battery and tape. It will be priced at less than 300,000 yen,
roughly about $2,100.

Two others who filed peti
tions were Fred Korematsu
and Minoru Yasui. Korema
tsu, whose case was based
on the 1944 Supreme Court'
ruling upholding the intern
ments, had his conviction
overturned in November 1983
by U.S. District Judge Mari
lyn Hall Patel on grounds
similar to those of Hirabaya
shi's case. Yasui, who died
in November of 1986; had his
conviction of violating curfew
orders vacated by a federal
judge who refused to conduct
a fact-finding process to ad
dress allegations of govern
ment misconduct.

where it's highly desirable,
you can just about put any
price you want on it.
Not everyone in Japan is
sharing the wealth. But the
general standard of living has
risen vastly in the decades
since war's end thanks to a
variety of very good reasons.
Hunger no longer stalks the
countryside. Health standards
are about the highest in the
world, and no nation sur
passes it in the longevity of
its citizens. There is stress
living in the new Japan, but
even that is tolerable after the
misery of the immediate
postwar years. I wondered if
my friend was fortunate
enough to live long enough to
forget the hunger that she
had known for so long.
