(Toronto Buddhist Church)
On Oct. 1, 2, and 3 I was
given the opportunity to at
tend the annual seminar
sponsored by Ekoji Buddhist
Temple in Washington, D.C.
The theme was “Buddha
Dharma: Making Democracy
Work.”
This seminar was held in
conjunction with the com
memoration of Smithsonian
exhibit on Japanese Ameri
cans and the Bicentennial of
the U.S. Constitution.
On Oct. 1, there were thou
sands of Americans, many of
them, _ Japanese American
Veterans or victims of war
time internment, gathered at
the front steps of the capitol
building. Senator Spark Mat
sunaga from Hawaii was the
keynote speaker at the
ceremony sponsored by the
National Japanese American
History Society, National Ja
panese American Citizens
League and the National Ni
sei Veterans Committee.
Other featured speakers were
former Supreme Court Jus
tice Arthur Goldberg, Senator
Daniel Inouye, Democrat
from Hawaii, representatives
Norman Mineta, Democrat
from California, Daniel Akaka,
Democrat from Hawaii, Robert
Matsui, Democrat from Cali
fornia, Patricia Saiki, Repub
lican from Hawaii and the
former Bishop of Buddhist

exhibit entitled
Perfect Union: Japanese
Americans and the Constitu
tion” tells the story of
Japanese immigration, de
scribes their struggle for suc
cess and also explores the
period of World War II when
racial prejudice and fear
upset the delicate balance
between the rights of the
citizens and the power of the
states. As a result, there was
a three-year internment of
over 120,000 Americans of
Japanese ancestry and their
legal immigrant parents.
The exhibit also highlights
the accomplishments of
highly-decorated Japanese
American combat and intelli
gence units during the war. It
displays more than 1,000
items including photographs,
letters, documents, and ac
tual reproduction of the in

WINNIPEG. — Honourable Judy Wasylycia-Leis, Minister
of Culture, Heritage, and Recreation informed the Manitoba
JCCC Board that a capital grant of $50,000 has been approved.
The grant was from the Manitoba Community Places program
which is a provincial government initiative designed to en
courage and assist community organizations in undertaking
capital or building projects.
-----The grant^will be used by the MJCCC towards the pur
chase of a building for a cultural centre and the needed re
novations. The grant was reported as a great incentive for the
present fund raising drive which is presently underway in

SCARBOROUGH, Ont. —
Softball pitching sensation,
Vicki Miwa, working the
mound for Bowling Green
State University of Ohio, has
been selected Top Pitcher in
the Mid American Conference
for 1987. She also won in 1986.
Vicki, 22-year-old daughter
of Harold and Rae Miwa, and
granddaughter of Mrs. Tomi
Miwa and Mr. and Mrs. H.
Taira, joined Bowling Green
on a scholarship after the
softball program at Northern
Arizona University, where she
was attending in 1985, was
discontinued. Her record at
Bowling Green consists of 21
comleted games, 171 innings
pitches, 136 strike outs, 15
shut outs, and
wins,
finishing second in the Mid
American Conference in strike
outs and E.R.A. of (.69).
She was also named to se
cond team all star pitcher in
the Mid Eastern American
Conference by the National
Coaches Association of
America.
Back in Canada during the
summer, Vicki plays on Scarboro's Cedar Hill Ladies
Junior Team. In 1984 she was
named Most Valuable Player
at the Ontario Provincial
Games. Then, again, in 1985
and 1986 was named top pit
cher in Ontario and led her
team to a 4th place finish in
the Canadian Junior Na
tionals in 1986.
One of her many feats occured in an exhibition game
with the world's 4th ranking
senior team from Puerto Rico

Vicki Miwa
including one of the world's
top hitters. Vicki posted an
impressive 7 to 0 victory
allowing only 5 hits, striking
out 6, and not allowing a
walk.
A graduate of Cedarbrae
Collegiate in Scarboro, she
started her softball career at
the age of 10, when she join
ed a team coached by her
father. Since that time Vicki
has never looked back.

religion. However good the
religion may be, unless we
put it into practise daily, it
doesn't mean anything.
And also at the seminar I
was reminded of the famous
words of Abraham Lincoln;
the government of the peo
ple, by the people and for the
people. Actually each one of
us is responsible to the pre
sent government, because
we cast our votes and elect
representatives. Each one of
us is responsible to the pre
sent society, because we are
part of the society. I believe
this is the teaching of the
Buddha; the truth of in
terdependence which tells us
that everything is closely
related to each other.
Problem seems to be,
however, we human beings.
We have greed, anger, and
blindness. Because of this,
we continue to create pro
blems. The important thing is
constant checking in politics
and religion.

an old radio, stove, curtain
dividers and bare electric
bulbs. Also on Oct. 2 _there
was a memorial service at Arl
ington Cemetery Amphi
theater and after that we
ministers paid tribute to
some graves of Nisei
soldiers.
As one of the new im
migrants to Canada myself, I
have heard that with the
breakout of the Pacific War,
the prejudice and hysteria
overruled the reasons of the
government and the similar
unfortunate actions took
place in Canada. However, I
have never felt the impact as
strong as this one until I saw
the exhibition and the huge
gathering of Japanese Ameri
cans. I remember Daniel In
ouye mention that however
good the constitution may
be, unless we citizens check
it constantly, it is only a piece
of paper. I agree with him
wholeheartedly and we can
say that it is the same in

B.C. dogfish bound for Japan
UCUELET, B.C. — A
Ucuelet seafood processor
will ship 20 tonnes of dogfish
to Japan this fall and hopes
to build a fishery into a
20-tonne-a-day production by
the New Year.
Ucluelet Seafood Proces
sors Ltd., a buyer based in the
vilage, has turned to buying
dogfish shark as a result of
curtailed trolling seasons off
the west coast of Vancouver
Island.
“It's just marginal right
now,” manager Mike Buston
said. “We more or less do it
to keep the plant open and br
ing in some revenue.”
In April, May and June of

this year, the plant processed
nearly 200,000 pounds of
dogfish and shipped it to
Japan for 70 cents Cdn. per
pound.
The plant hopes to in
crease volume because the
Japanese market is unlimited
for the species. Dogfish sells
as a delicacy in the low price
range for Japanese con
sumers and the domestic
shark industry there is in
decline.

Buston says 20 tonnes
have been processed this fall
but he hopes to do that much
each day by January and
February of 1988.
