LOS ANGELES. — What if
you could invent a machine
that could erase fatigue, help

Neat idea — but it has

So says its creator, Dr.
Yoshiro Nakamatsu, a Tokyo
inventor who showed off his
Cerebrex computerized chair
at the inaugural Invention
Convention held recently at
the Los Angeles Convention
Center.
Nearly 100 inventors show
ed up for the event, billed as
the first opportunity for in
ventors to display their crea
tions and learn more about
the marketing and manufac
turing process.
“This machine is for peo
ple who use their brains a
lot,” said Nakamatsu, looking
very alert while seated in one
of his Cerebrex contraptions.

“It affects the blood and
chemicals in the brain very
favorably.”
Nakamatsu was one of the
star attractions at the threeday event. Part of the fame,
Kg said, derives from the fact
that the Cerebrex is his
2,360th patented invention,
making him the Babe Ruth of
inventors. Some of his other
inventions include “talking
paper,” non-fading signs and
14 computer related products.
“Your Thomas Edison only
had 1,093 patents, you
know,” he said. Sitting in the

LOS ANGELES. — If President Reagan does not veto
the redress legislation now
pending in the Senate,
Japanese Americans and
legal resident aliens interned
in relocation camps during
WW2 will receive $20,000

An article in the Kashu
Mainichi notes that people
may write to the National Ar

officially establish that they
were interned, it is suggested
that it would be wise to do
this before the redress
legislation becomes law. If
the bill is signed, the archives

swamped with requests and
responses may be delayed.

LONDON. — Japanese sci
entists are facing an unex
pected ethical barrier to
greater international recogni
tion of their research.
A growing number of
foreign scientific magazines
are
refusing to
print
Japanese research papers
based on seemingly sadistic
experiments on laboratory
animals.
Reasons cited for rejection
included
insufficient
measures to reduce the pain
that animals suffered during
experiments, and shortcom
ings in “mercy killings”
thereafter.
Another question raised
was whether the experiments
were even necessary at all. In
one case researchers at a
university in western Japan
strangled a dog to check
how much “adrenaline” it
secreted while being choked
to death.
Not surprisingly, the Irish
academic magazine to which
the paper was submitted re
jected it as “unethical.”
Last year about 15 million
mice, 4 million rats, 60,000
dogs and 4,000 monkeys are
estimated to have been used
as guinea pigs throughout
Japan.
