were denied citizenship
under the law in effect at that
time. Others felt they faced ;
an insurmountable wall of i
discrimination despite their
American citizenship..
So
both groups had gone to •
Japan in search of opportu
nity, and the war made their
stay permanent.
Without exception, they
played important roles in
-Japan's postwar recovery,

trust and understanding between Japan and the United
States. These are notable ac
complishment. But I couldn't
help but wonder about the
greater contribution they
might have been able to make
to the United States of Ame
rica, and the loss we as a
nation suffered as a result
of the racism that led them
