Whither goes Kabuki?
Only Ennosuke knows
By YURI KAGEYAMA
It wasn't that the other acts were
all worthless. Tamasaburo Bando
was gorgeous as the courtesan in
“Sukeroku Yukarino Edo Zakura,”
which had a splendid fashion-showarray of costumes and Kanzaburo
Nakamura, in his first appearance
since his illness, showed his power
ful veteran talents in the title role of
“Shunkan.” But overall, still far cries
from innovative Kabuki.
For example, in the final scene of
“Sukeroku,” Danjuro Ichikawa does
his much-publicized jumping in the
water routine. But the effect was so
undramatic, no water was really
needed. When Ennosuke uses water
(or any other Kabuki special effect), it
serves a dramatic purpose — as,
drowning in a sea represented by
blue cloth, he takes a mouthful of
water and then spits it out; or he
jumps in a tank, then emerges, a
