the next best thing to seeing
the grand tournament.
Training begins in the wee
hours of the morning with the
lowest-ranked wrestlers stret
ching, grunting and sparring
in the keikoba (practice ring),
a sand area in the middle of
the living room on the first
floor of the stable.
The coach — wearing a
white loincloth to denote
sekitori rank — is particularly
harsh on the novice wrestlers
and will not hesitate to slap,
kick, hit with a broom, throw
against the wall or pull the
hair of anyone who shows
signs of pain or fatigue.
The stablemaster shows up
about an hour after practice
has begun and from his seat
near the low-burning wood
stove occasionally shouts
comments and criticisms at
the wrestlers before him. The
stable's
patrons
also
observe the training session
to check the progress of their
“merchandise.”
As the morning wears on,
the hierarchy of the sumo
world
unfolds
before
visitors' eyes. The higher a
wrestler's rank, the longer he
gets to sleep. Middle-ranked
wrestlers enter the ring around
7 a.m. while the lowest-ranked
ones retreat to the kitchen to
begin preparing lunch and
cleaning the stable.
By 9 a.m. some men of
sekitori status have joined
the ring and the level of the
wrestling rises accordingly.
The low men on the totem
pole return at this time to
serve water, readadjust the
loincloths and massage the
muscles of their superiors.
Middle-ranking wrestlers
sparring with the stable's
sekitori get dragged in circles
by their topknot and flipped
onto the practice ring floor.
Many restaurants in
Ryogoku serve chanko nabe,
the hearty stew that is the
basis of the sumo diet.
Chanko nabe is prepared in
cooking pots set before the
customer using raw vegeta
bles, tofu, udon noodles, fine
ly chopped chicken and fish.
Authentic chanko nabe con
tains no other kinds of meat,
as the consumption of four
legged animals is taboo, ac
cording to sumo tradition.
After all the vegetables and
meat are eaten, rice is added
to the remaining broth, to
make a thick soup.
