McFarland has convictions
relating to nacotics, a hit-andrun traffic accident and
assault on a police officer.
Lamperson answered ab
ruptly when lawyer Brian Mur
phy asked whether McFar
land — who was 15 minutes
late for the sentencing —
could serve the time on week
ends so she could be with her
teenage daughters.
“I refuse,” said Lamper
son, who immediately rose
and left the courtroom.
The trial also heard testi

dog trainer who said he had
to destroy seven of eight pit
bulls he was handling because
they were unmanageable.
He said the eighth dog
tried to eat his way through a
car.
Pit bulls weigh about 18
kilograms (40 pounds). Their
bite delivers a presure twice
that of a German shepherd.

Career-minded women are
still a rarity in Japan
TOKYO — A Japanese offi
ce worker filed for divorce
here recently, complaining
that his wife was neglecting
her housework and family
duties to participate in religious activities.
The judge granted the divorce.
Religious
freedom
must be respected, he ruled,
but in this case the man often
had to cook his own dinner
and run his own bath, clearly
a “betrayal” by the woman
of “her duties as a wife.”
Although Japanese women
are among the most educated
and affluent in the world,
their primary role is still that
of a housewife and mother,
expected to wake early with
the children and stay up late
to provide food, bath and bed
for husbands arriving from
work and after-hours enter
taining.
case not long ago.
A woman now heads the
main opposition party in par
liament.

Women make up about 40
per cent of Japan's work
force. But those who venture
outside the house usually are
given the lowest paid, least
significant work, often wear
ing office uniforms with
aprons to run errands and
pour tea for bosses and male
colleagues. On average, they
earn half of what men do.
“We are quite unequal,”
said Kimie Enami, a clerical
worker at an accounting of
fice, who is in her mid-40s.
“The top is all men, women
are all basically assistants
and we are expected to serve
tea and clean the office.”
Until two years ago, when
the male - dominated pariament approved a weak equal
opportunity law, many com
panies did not accept job
applications from women.
Some that did hire young
single women often required
them to live with their parents
as a condition of employ
ment.
Today, women are still bar
red from many jobs that re
quire them to work past 10
p.m. and even highly quali
fied women have trouble find
ing jobs. Naoko Kawakami, a
graduate of a top university
here and a part-time English

she said in a recent inter

— washing dishes.
