TOKYO. — Japan is experiencing a new “Boom-u” — ven
ding machines. A model (above) in Tokyo displays jewelry
such as earings, diamond pendants and other items available
by slipping coins into the machines. They also offer beer,
wine, whisky, hot sake, rice, hamburgers, noodles, beancurd,
Bibles, lottery tickets, pornographic magazines, incense,
job opportunities and fish bait.
“With over 5 million machines, we have the highest
number per capita,” says an official of the Japan Vending
Machine Industry Association, which puts annual sales
through machines at the equivalent of $3.69 billion
(Canadian).
The customers may seek anonymity as they.put their coins
in the slots but the vending machines speak, sometimes
thanking customers for their patronage or reminding them,
“Please do not forget your change.”

First Jpnz. women photographed abroad?
PARIS, France. — Old pho

who went to Europe as mem

by the Tokugawa shogunate
in 1864 have been discovered
recently in Saint Cyr City in
suburban Paris.

“Sumi,” whose visit to
Europe had been known from
a photo taken in Marseilles,
and photo at right shows
another whose name is not

The photos, preserved at
the state archives, were
