Hitachi Ltd.
said recently it has developed
jointly with the University of
Tokyo, a new highly sensitive
method that can be used to
detect cancer in its early
stages.
The new method uses a op
tical echoing or photo-acou
stic effect produced through
laser beam irradiation and
has roughly 1,000 times
greater sensitivity than the
conventional absorptiometer
formula, the company said.
It can be used to detect the
density of antigens in blood
serum which will cause can
cer and other diseases such
as rheumatism, and enable
doctors to diagnose the
stage of a disease more easi
ly, the company said.
In the newly developed
testing method, called the
latex fixation test, it uses
submicron particles of latex
coated with antibiolles to
trap the antigens which then
adhere to each other in clus
ters, it said.
Each latex particle is about
0.2 micron in size. One

method, the energy given off
by the antigen-containing
slusters appears in the form
of heat when hit by a laser
beam and is measured by pie

said.
A test of rehumatism anti

method could detect 100
latex particles per 1 cc — a
sensitivity about 1,000 times
greater than the conventional
method, the company said.
