Grand Kabuki Canada tour
premier June 3 — 4, Toronto
By DR. MIKE HOSHIKO
On the west side of Bergstrum Road (now 146 St.), just
about a couple of blocks
north of the Townline Road
(now 96th Ave.), stood the on
ly Japanese store in Surrey. It
existed from the thirties until
just before the war when the
owner sold out and returned
to Japan. It was called
Shigeta Trading Store. Mr.
Shigeta's given name was
really “Hitoshi” but due to
some mix-up it became
“Nizo” when he entered
Canada.
The store stood on the
north edge of what used to be
a five acre strawberry, fruit
and chicken farm. It was call
ed a trading store because
during the Depression people
didn't have much cash, and
so they traded whatever they
had for groceries and other
items.
As the business’ grew- Mr.
Shigeta kept on enlarging the
store with additions that con
nected to other buildings, in
cluding the former chicken
houses. His . many children
had fun running the long dis
tance from one end of the
store to the other. Out in front
he added a 76 gasoline pump.
