SURREY, B.C. — On the
west side of Bergstrum Road
(now 146 St.), just about a
couple of blocks north of the
Townline Road (now 96th
Ave.), stood the only Japan
ese store in Surrey. It existed
from the thirties until just be
fore the war when the owner
sold out and returned to Ja

Trading Store. Mr. Shigeta's
given name was really “Hito

it became “Nizo” when he en
tered Canada.
The store stood on the
north edge of what used to be
a five acre strawberry, fruit
and chicken farm. It was call
ed a trading store because
during the Depression people
didn't have much cash, and
so they traded whatever they
had for groceries and other
items. As the business grew
Mr. Shigeta kept on enlarging
the store with additions that
connected to other buildings,
including the former chicken
houses. His many children

TORONTO. — Even before
reaching the 1st target of
raising one million dollars to
purchase the property for the
Momiji Seniors' Centre, a se

to furnish the Seniors' Cen

Ogaki, at the Annual General
Meeting of the Momiji Health
Care Society held recently at
the Japanese Canadian Cul

The purchasing of 120 spe

will absorb most of this tar

$750,000
as
the
new
target
when
the
$100,000 still needed to reach
the 1st million is added to the
furnishing target. Large Cor
porations in the community
are encouraged to provide
funds to furnish one or more
of these units. Plaques could
be arranged to acknowledge
such contributions. We hope
we can continue to receive
support from the many smal
ler but important individual
donations which make up the
bulk of our donations to date.
At the same Annual Gener
al Meeting, the following new
Board of Director members
were elected: Tammy Maru
bashi, Dick Matsui, Reg Mori,
Dan Washimoto and Dr. Mi
sao Yoneyama. These well
known community members
will be joined by the follow

Air Canada expects to
fly to Japan in 2 years
VANCOUVER. — It will be
two years before Air Canada
exercises its right to fly from
Vancouver to Korea and by
that time it could also be serv
ing Japan, Air Canada presi
dent Pierre Jeanniot said re
cently.
Jeanniot said in Vancouver
that his airline wants to be
come the second designated
Canadian carrier to Japan in
competition with Canadian
Airlines International.
“The day is coming when a
second carrier will be design
ated and Air Canada wants to
be assigned that role,” Jean
niot told the Vancouver Board
of Trade.
He said this would open the
doors for a second Japanese
airline, such as All Nipon, to
fly to Canada in competition
with Japan Air Lines.
“While we certainly very
much respect Japanese effi
ciency, we are also quite con
fident of our own abilities. We
believe we can hold our own
with any of the Pacific car
riers.”
In an interview, Jeanniot
said Air Canada flights would
be from Vancouver to either
Tokyo or Osaka.
“There are a lot of bi laterals
(agreements) on the plate and
each country has its own set
of priorities, but I would hope
it will be in the next year or
two.”___________ ;__________

Jpn researchers find gold
crown in ancient coffin
TOKYO. — Japanese archaeolo
gists reported finding a gold and cop
per crown and other items dating
back about 1,400 years, after per
forming a fiberscopic probe June 2
on the inside of a stone coffin at the
ancient Fujinoki Tumulus.
Hironobu Ishino, vice president of
the Nara Prefectural Kashihara Arch
aeological Research Institute, said
that the stone coffin is believed to
have not been opened since it was
placed inside the round-shaped tum
ulus.
The tumulus, believed to have
been built around the 6th century, is
located about 350 meters west of
Horyuji Temple in Nara.
A gold and copper accessory for a
crown, a sword with a large orna
mental ring at the end of the grip,
gems, two twisted strings apparently
for binding the crown and a leg bone
were also revealed in the probe, re
searchers said.
In addition, archaeologists
discovered what appeared to be an
adult's spine, two tiny gold chains
that they believe may have been at
tached to earrings, and water at the
bottom of the inside of the coffin, he
said.
More artifacts are expected to be
found submerged in the water, which
archaeologists are now trying to find
a way to drain.
Reasearchers said that they first
used a 5.9-cm-diameter fiberscope to
examine the inside of the 2.35-meterlong coffin, and then replaced it with
one 8mm in diameter the next day.
The fiberscope was moved at 5-cm
increments, and rotated 360 degrees
at each point so pictures could be
taken.
The probe is in preparation for re
moval of the casket lid, scheduled to
take place in autumn.
Before the fiberscope was insert
ed, researchers pushed a tube
through the hole to the inside to take
an air sample, which reportedly reg
istered 99 percent humidity.
In an earlier excavation in autumn
1985, about 3,500 burial accessories,
including weapons and riding gear,
were found in the stone chamber of
the tumulus along with the coffin.

RESEARCHERS TAKE AIR
SAMPLES through a tube in
serted into a coffin of the
ancient Fujinoki tumulus in
Nara Prefecture June 2 before
their fiberscopic probe of the
contents.
The quality and quantity of the art
ifacts found led archaeologists to be
lieve the person entombed was close
to Prince Shotoku (574-622), a politi
cal leader and regent for Empress
Suiko (593-628).
But the coffin, made of tuff and
colored vermillion with four pro
tuberances on the lid, was not open
ed during the 1985 excavation out of
fear that the contents would be dam
aged by exposure to air.
Akio Katsube, deputy director of
the museum attached to the Kash
ihara Archaeological Research Insti
tute, said a relief carved on what ap
peared to be an accessory for a
crown resembles one carved on a
metal saddle found at the dig in au
tumn 1985.
Kanekatsu Inokatsu, cultural re
search section chief of Nara National
Research Institute of Cultural Pro
perties' Asuka Museum) speculates
that the person entombed was a po
werful ruler of major river areas who
had strong interest in Korean cul
ture.
The crown-like object might have
come from either the Kaya region or
the Silla kingdom on the Korean Pen
insula, although the examination has
yet to yield accurate clues as to the
identity of the entombed person, Ino
katsu said.
