Interpreters Koyanagis build
link with possible twin city
BURLINGTON, Ont. — Jim
Koyanagi admits his latest
construction project should
be a challenge.
That's because the Bur
lington architect has been
called upon to help build a
communications bridge bet
ween the municipality and its
proposed twin city of Itaba
shi, Japan.
The first plank in that plat
form was put in place recent
ly when Mr. Koyagani and his
wife Kimiko served as inter
preters for the first official
visit to Burlington by Itabashi
Mayor Keizo Kurihara, his
wife Tsuyako and the mayor's
secretary Haruo Akiba.
The trio was accompanied
on their visit by Nobu Takahasi from the Japan Travel
Bureau based in Toronto.
“I'm honored that I was
asked to be an interpreter,”
Mr. Koyanagi said, adding
he has spent some time
brushing up on his Japanese
for the special occasion.
“I'm fluent enough when it
comes to regular conversa
tion but if the discussion
becomes too technical I may
