IMPROVEMENTS

Stop 103 is today a major social force serving the poor in
Toronto. But when it was struggling at the beginning at St.
Stephen's in the Field, Morris Tamura took Director, Br.
Robert and the staff, under his care and taught them about
the street people whom they desired to serve. For more years
than I can remember, the streets were Morris's home. He died
off cancer off the throat.

CALL

For Morris Mamoru Tamura
When I visited you towards the end,
Emaciated, drawn, slower than ever,
And your voice, showing the effects
Of that dread disease that would not elsewhere go.

You were writing because, by then,
Endless explaining was so difficult.
No! No! No hospitals, like cages.
All those disciplines, rules and do nots.

And to the end you wanted your freedom;
Your freedom to awake at the oddest hour;
To wake and cross to the refrigerator,
To sit at your only table, and write your haiku.
And at the end when to the hospital you finally had to go,
Little sister, Aiko, and beloved Pat kept watch while you slipt away
Into the come from which you would not awake;
They waited until the father figure arrived.

And Padre called you, loud he called, and again,
And before you could cross that river,
You had to return; wide-eyed and up you sat,
To hold him one last time before going over.
But you had to lie there in the grey coffin, paid for by welfare,
Listening to the Hawaiian Padre read you poetry,
Reminding us of how much the holy other meant,
Of deep love that makes us act in such strange ways.

CANADAYOUR
CARE IS SHOWING.

But how difficult was it for you to lie there,
While Robert spoke the truth about you,
And both of you, after hours, drinking into oblivion,
But only for him did the cure take.

You were the streetwise, the indigent, the poor-smart,
That the middle class-believers had come to serve,
And they were severely tested on your mettle,
And on your nettle and sharpened barbs, they came to tears.
For you were a failure, and you knew it.
And that your greatest strength;
Never trying to be a success, like the “Stop”,
But a bit oblivious, they simply moved on.
Once I heard you cry, and your desire to change,
And with sadness, I could but listen to the Japanese success drive,
Withering, and the woeful tale of attempts to take the cure,
And we took this brokenness, laying it before the altar, and cried.

And we put your bones in the bosom of the earth,
Between your mother's and your father's
With prayer and tears we blessed you;
To return to the creator with whom you needed to fight.
Beer you could comprehend, but for prayer,
Prayers in church, out of church
You had no use, but your own smile,
And your work, despite it all, was the blessing,
That threw a wrench among the middle class,
Well-meaning volunteers who loved your stories,
And your soups, made out of nothing;
Who sent you begging; after all, you were so good at it.
But you had no great ideals, only a cry:
Wondering why the Lord brought you to the city,
Recognizing that love was at the bottom of all,
That simple charity was God's hand at work.
