By RODNEY NUTT
VANCOUVER. — The just-released
president's report on the University
of British Columbia's links to Asia
— Toward the Pacific Century —
makes for some very interesting
reading.
For example, an Asian studies pro
gram at UBC was proposed as early
as 1918 but a search of university ar
chives indicates that Asian course
content was minimal until the 1930s.
At that point, students of Asian
background began to have impact on
the university.
The Chinese Students' Associa
tion was estblished in 1930, followed
by the Japanese Students' Club the
following year. In fact, the Chinese
Varsity Club held its 50th anniversary
reunion this year.
In 1933, Japanese internationalist
and peace advocate Dr. Inazo Nitobe
lectured on campus, calling for in
creased communication and under

The institute will hold a six-week

Japanese Foreign Minister
