By JOHN FLANAGAN

KYOTO — “Internationalization is
a pointless topic of conversation,”
says Buddhist monk Seiko Hirata.
“It's a natural trend, a reality.”
Hirata studied theological philo
sophy from 1962-64 in West Ger
many. He has sensed the world's
gradual integration in this field of
religion via exchange of ideas.
Along with the many Japanese
Christians, “there are already five
million Buddhists in America,” he
cited as an example.
For its part, Tenryuji, Hirata's tem
ple — a large, 14th century temple
set in the wooded Arashiyama area
— invites people from abroad every
year to stay and study Zen.
Integration was again apparent to
Hirata on a recent trip to East
Germany, where religion is con
sidered “the people's opium,” and
monks age non-existent. There he
found the world, separated into com
munist and capitalist blocks, is not
as disconnected as he previously in
visioned.

From a temple known for its contribution to aesthetic Buddhism, Hi
rata gave a lecture on Zen art in
Rostock, East Germany. Three hun
dred inquisitive souls crowded into
a room rated to only accommodate
100.
The presentation, however, quickly
deviated from its theme and Hirata
spent much of his time answering
questions about Buddhism.

“I was very surprised to see so
much interest in Zen and that stores
carry many books on Buddhism,” he
said of East Germany. “Some people
even asked me to open up a monas
tery.”; •’
;

When asked his opinions of Chris
tianity, a sublime, knowing, smile
spread across his face as he began
to speak about Zen and Western
culture, his life-long interests.
“Actually, Christianity and bud
dhism are quite similar,” he said.
There are some big differences
between the two religions; but “the
fundamentals are the same,” Hirata
said.
One big difference lies in the fact
that Christianity's top position is
held by God. Buddhism's founder
was but a man, he said.

Basic similarities stem from the
importance of goodness and beliefs
in the soul and its rebirth into more
pleasing existence, such as heaven,
for people of virtue or, hell(s) as a
punishment.
Unfortunately, Hirata said he will
not expand on his theory until his
ongoing research into the question
in integration and the similarities of
Zen and Christianity is complete.
“I'm still thinking about that,” he
said, smiling.

People in their desire for advan
cement, had not considered the im
portance of “completing their educa
tion” with moral thought, Hirata
believes.
“If Zen could help society, I would
like to teach a Samurai's evening
courses,” he said.

Hirata likened the saying to a
samurai's education. “In the day
Samurai studied the art of killing
and the use of swords, and at night
he learned morals.
“If Samurai only studies at night
he would not be able to protect. And
if he concentrated his energies only
in the day he would not be much
more than a killer.
“Society focuses only on a Samu
rai's daytime education,” he said,
explaining that today's “sword” is
technology.

With the internationalization and
the brisk changes the world is un
dergoing, many may not see a role
for Zen in modern society. But for
Hirata its role is quite clear.
“As in the workings of modern
society, there are two kinds of
swords — the one that kills and the
one that gives life,” he said repeat
ing an old proverb.
