Secret letter from Lord
Toyotomi Hideyoshi
OSAKA — A confidential
letter sent, by 16th century
warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi
was displayed Nov. 3 at Osaka Castle. It is one of only two
existing secret documents
signed by him.
In the secret letter Toyoto
mi urges Uehara Motosuke,
commander of the opposing
Moori clan who was defen
ding Hibata Castle (in to
day's Okayama Prefecture),
to betray Moori and join his
side.
Historians say the letter is
an important document that
confirms Toyotomi brilliance
as a strategist and politician.
The letter, dated April 24,
1582, bears Toyotomi's sig
nature. At that time he was
leading troops sent by Oda
Nobunaga, the main force be
hind the 16th century reunifi
cation of Japan, to conquer
Moori.
In the letter to Uehara, To
yotomi said the time had
come for him to leave Moori's
side and join his forces be
cause victory was almost cer-
The letter had been kept for
more than 300 years by the
descendants of Uehara Soan,
a subordinate of Uehara
Motosuke, who is believed
to have carried the secret
message from Toyotomi to
Uehara.
En Uehara, an 86-year-old
descendant of Uehara Soan,
recently showed the letter to
the manager of Osaka Castle,
which has preserved many
historical documents related
to Toyotomi.
Uehara told the manager
the letter had been handed
down as a family treasure and
said she was unaware of its
historical value. She plans to
give the letter to the castle.

By David Suzuki with Eileen^

It’s too early to speak of any
book as the definitive work
on AIDS: we are still in the
early days of exploring.the
dread epidemic. But this 96page volume is as good a
map as one can find of the
territory explored to date.
Based on a program in David
Suzuki's award-winning "The
Nature of Things" CBC
television scries, this is a
sound basic reference for the
general reader which lays to
rest some of the scariest
myths and clarifies the real
dangers.
Dr Suzuki and his
associates trace the history of
AIDS, demonstrating how it
differs from epidemics of the
past and why it poses-such a
puzzle to those who would
control it. They describe the
process which occurs within
the cells of the human body
which has made AIDS such a
deadly puzzle for medical
researchers. While the
scientific world has been
swift to examine the
implications of the disease
and researchers are hard at
work in laboratories in many
countries, no cures are yet in
sight.
In the meantime, the
authors clearly prescribe
exactly what we.must do to
avoid contracting the AIDS
virus,
