TORONTO. — President of the Toronto JO Cultural Cen

Foundation Award on behalf of the JCCC at the Hotel Otani
in Tokyo on October 18th, 1988. The award accompanied by
an honorarium of 3 million yen (approx-. $27,000 Cdn.), was
made in recognition of the JCCC's outstanding contribu
tions to cultural exchange and mutual understanding bet
ween Japan and Canada.

JOE AND I have known each other
about three years now, having first
met during our common service on a
board. So it wasn't by any means a
couple of strangers haying lunch.
And so when Joe heard about some
of the background of the uprooting
incarceration (“How many?” “You,
too?” “There were no charges, were
there?”), I was flabbergasted. Here
was a highly-educated man, a bank
president — and he had heard next
to nothing about the 1942 actions of
our government directed toward per
sons of Japanese ancestry residing
along the Pacific Coast.
As Joe listened to some of the ov
erall details, he became indignant.
WAS I BITTER? I replied that much
as I deplored what happened, bitter
ness was not one of the reactions.
“Bitterness corrodes and can be des
tructive,” I commented; “I wasn 't go
ing to let that incident destroy me.” I
went on to say, however, that I was
determined that my country never re
peat such an act upon any others of
our society, whether it be based on
race, religion, or such other arbitrary
measure.
THE 442ND was mentioned by Joe.
(“I hear they were the most decor

fathom why the young men (and wo

their families were being held in bar

WINNIPEG. — Tani Miki represented the National Asso

Ethno-Cultural Youth Forum held in Ottawa on November
4 — 6, 1988. The conference involved cross-cultural represen

Prominent guest speakers included leaders of ethnic
communities, youth organizations and representatives from
the Federal government. The discussions focused upon
economic, political, social and cultural issues including
federal government initiatives like Meech Lake Accord and
the Multiculturalism Act, which are concerns to ethnic and
visible minority groups. The workshop provided organization

one do that?”) Well, I expressed my
personal view which may very well be
the view shared by many AJA's. That
is that this country is the only“mother” we have, and even though it
treated us like step-children during
those years, the fact was that it was
our mother. And our mother was in
danger, and we needed to defend her
and at the same time prove to her our
devotion and commitment.
That, incidentally, is not mere rhe

it. Firmly.
AND, YES, this mother country did

one do that?”) Well, I expressed my
personal view which may very well be
the view shared by many AJA's. That
is that this country is the only“mother” we have, and even though it
treated us like step-children during
those years, the fact was that it was
our mother. And our mother was in
danger, and we needed to defend her
and at the same time prove to her our
devotion and commitment.
That, incidentally, is not mere rhe
toric on my part. I happen to believe
it. Firmly.
AND, YES, this mother country did
commit errors. But the redeeming
beauty of the nation is that it has the
capability to attempt to amend its
wrongs. And it did so by the Civil Li-,
